I have only been able to eat rice and yogurt for a week now. I eat a yogurt for breakfast, a half cup of white Basmati rice for lunch, and if I am up to it a half cup of Basmati rice for dinner. Seems to be every other day I can hamdle dinner. I take a multivitamin too. It looks like it may take 2 weeks to a month of eating like this for this episode to calm down. Docs don't give me meds because I have only been diagnosed with non-specific colitis and they can never find anything. Problem is by the time I can get in to get any tests, it is all better. I heal quick because of the diet I start when I get sick which is only because I cannot tolerate anything else. Some days water is too much to handle.

Sorry for the rant. i just need to vent.

I was actually diagnosed with Crohn's when I first got sick because of the extensive ulceration through my whole upper and lower digestive system. But then it healed so fast without scarring that they said I could not have Crohn's. But now they are on the fence about it.

Holy Cow Batman...............you must be losing weight and you are not getting any nutrients.  How do you function on so little to eat?  Have you ever tried to hang on and see the Dr. while your episode is full blown before you start the restrictive diet?  Perhaps they would be able to start a medication to keep the flare ups at bay. confused

I feel so bad you cannot eat anymore than that.  You have my prayers and I will be watching for further posts.  Stick with us.  We are open for venting. :)

If I try to hang on I get terrible anxiety. What kicked all my problems off originally was terrible food poisoning. I almost died. So now whenever I get sick it creates a terrible anxiety and I will do anything to make it go away ASAP including not eating at all if I can. I rarely do that for more than a day or two though. I can seem to tolerate a protein drink that includes all sorts of vitamins when I go to the gym 3 times per week. I take it easy at the gym when it acts up, but going to the gym helps the anxiety. I also tried Yoga for the first time today. I really liked it but I need to be careful of some of the poses, the ones that involve the stomach muscles. I also take a multivitamin every day and try to drink mineral water.

I have lost about 10 lbs in the past week, but I could stand lose another ten or so anyway, LOL.

Thanks for listening. ;-)

You need to find a safe protein to add into that mix. Maybe an egg "scrambeled." No milk or any of that fluffy stuff just the egg on the pan, broken up. If you can't handle that you need to drink protein shakes daily or you are never ever going to feel close to full or have any energy. But, I hear where you are coming from though b/c I too stick to a restrictive diet when flaring.

Hi Fitzy,
Can you tell me what you eat on your restrictive diet? My doc is working hard to control this flare but in the meantime I'm hardly eating. Hard boiled or scrambled eggs do seem to go down ok, so at least I'm getting protein.

I don't really have anything to add other than a simple rice substitude for flavor if your getting sick of it. White rice boiled in chicken broth is very good. I haven't tried it with other rice, but try experiementing with different broths for a little variety?

Other than that i'm sorry to hear it's so bad.

How about mixing vanilla flavored protein powder into your yogurt? You don't want your body to start shutting down, and when you are eating so little and still going to the gym....you are really taxing your body.

Please be careful with that kind of diet.  I too was being very restrictive during my last flare and realized that the "Crohn's" wasn't killing me the diet was.  I never thought I'd die of malnutrition but I was sure close to it.  Apparently my albumin plummeted to 1.4, and my GI said that if it goes to 1.2 I'm probably dead.  He gave me two months to live (that was last July).  I turned it around by eating egg whites by the dozen.  Apparently egg whites are the best source of albumin.  One month later I had doubled my albumin.  Even being on TPN couldn't raise it to that level.  Luckily I am now in remission and feeling great.  I only take LDN since none of the conventional meds ever worked for me.  Anyway, please add lots of eggs (like 7 or 8 a day) to your diet.

You should really try to supplement with Ensure or Boost as well. You can literally live off these drinks as they have all the nutrients you need. You cannot get healthier with the limited food you are currently eating. I know it's hard, but you've got to do what's best for your body.

I too am sick of rice. I have eaten rice nearly every single night for the past year with some protein. I have been on Humira since the end of September and while it has enabled me to eat solid foods, I still can;t tolerate any vegetables or fruits other than bananas, so I eat rice almost every night with my salmon, chicken or turkey(sometimes eat pasta instead). When I was in the throes of an acute flare and nothing was staying in me, I did find that pureeing food in the blender with broth was my salvation. I would put some chicken or turkey or even salmon in the blender with the rice and the broth, puree it until it was almost liquid or the consistency of soup and eat that. It gave me my protein and di not aggravate the already inflamed colon.

Sorry, just thought of one of favorite quotes:

I love rice. Rice is great when you are hungry and want 2000 of something. - Mitch Hedburg

I would try a couple ensure or similar nutrient drinks a day. They usually don't upset even the most sensitive of digestive systems.

Thanks for all the responses. I actually am not having much of a problem energy wise. If I start feeling weak, I just eat some rice and I am good. I put a generous amount of olive oil and a teaspoon of Smart Balance on the rice. The rice is also Basmati rice, so it has a popcorn like smell and taste. So I am getting some fat in my diet with the olive oil. I take a multivitamin once a day with the rice. On the days I go to the gym I drink a 300 calorie Myoplex protein drink with 42 grams of protein and a plethora of vitamins. For at least 2 weeks, sometimes a month, rice is the only thing I can tolerate even remotely. Eggs of any kind are a disaster for me.

Food is at least starting to smell appetizing in the last couple of days, so that is a good sign. I am in a much better mood today than I have been in a few weeks. Also a good sign. Next week I will probably add some beef into my diet in the form of lean hamburger meat with some fat free cheese on it. Beef is one of the only real foods (after rice) I can handle as I start to get better. I know they normally say stay away from beef, but definitely not in my case. My mother, who has ulcerative colitis, tolerates beef great as well. Chicken and fish are iffy until I am a bit better.

Gumby -

First I do liquids for a few days. Homemade protein shakes and smoothies, popsicles, pedialyte, gatorade, chicken broth, beef broth, butternut squash broth, tea... whatever... Then I add in yogurt, applesauce, banannas, next I add in rice, plain pasta, bread, finally I add in lean chicken, turkey sandwhich meat, mashed potatos, eggo waffles plain, oatmeal, whatever I feel I can handle. Then back to an almost full diet. I am fairly certain I have avoided steroids a few times doing that.

Recently however, wow not flaring, I have significantly lowered my carb and sugar intake. Now I am not sure what I will do when I flare if I will go back to the carbs or not.

i hate rice as well...but for a differant reason.... when i was little i lived in CA. it was very hot. and i took the garbage out one day and lifted the lid on the can. there was some type of dead meat that was the size of an orange. it was crawling with maggots. it looked just like a bowl of rice. now even if i see rice on a plate i HAVE to stare at it like its gonna move and wiggle. eventually a few grains will fall down the pile and that confirms to my brain that they are maggots. i would starve to death if thats all i had to eat... just my little story, bon appetite!

I used slim fast; tastes great and has the same vitamins as boost or ensure; put it in a blender, add ice, bananas, berries or whatever you can handle. Everyone reacts differently to various foods; i've always found things like rice, eggo waffles, pancakes, etc were easy on the system. Fruits and veggies hard; potatoes not so bad if they're boiled...hmmm what else can i suggest...poached eggs, chicken breast, lobster, haddock fillets were all pretty good...after that i add in lean cuts of beef such as NY striploin steak, roast beef (roasted yourself)...but like i said depends on the individual. Good Luck!!

mibiks...

have you tried making your own protien rich stocks that you can then use to cook the rice in...make a type or rice pilaf.

if you can tolerate it you simply make a stock using chicken or beef...you should be able to get the very cheap cuts (necks, blade meat, and so on...) from the grocer.  Simmer this for several hours with carrots, celery, small amount of onions (if you think that is okay)...if you use the celery leaves that is even better.  Nothing wrong with adding some greens such as collards and spinach....jsut simmer the heck out of it....once it cools if you used enough protien (meat and bones) it should gel once cooled.

then just use the stock/broth the same way you would use water with the rice...maybe use a little extra but cook it the normal amount of time...i have been told that cooking rice in such a way that you have some liquid left over and then consuming that liquid is a great way to get good flora and or bacteria into the system...personally I have used this rice mixture to sooth an upset stomach and to calm down my system when hit with the big "D".    I also like to make congee...it is a japanese/asian rice porridge that is very easy on the system but very filling.  the internet is filled with recipes.

I just ate a lean burger with some fat free cheese and some ketchup. Let's see how that goes. I was not feeling weak on the diet I was on, but when I start to feel better I seem to need more food. It is like my body decides it can live with little food when my system is healing and once it is getting better it goes back to wanting more food. So, I will slowly reintroduce some stuff. Veggies will probably be a no no for a while. I may be able to tolerate some berries in a couple of weeks, like blueberries, strawberries, raspberries and blackberries. Anyway, slowly improving. :-)

Alison - I use slim fast powder too! The powder is low dairy so I can mix it w/ soy milk, yogurt, protein and whatever goodies I wish.

I did really well with Kitcharee. Rice with mung beans and Turmeric, cumin, coreander. You get lots of soluble fiber and iron from the beans and it makes a complete protien. I couldn't eat ANYTHING before I started eating it. It really helped a lot.

Try going to India and living in an orphanage. Rice for dinner, rice for breakfast, rice for lunch. Rice, rice, rice! And you eat it with your hands. I was there in 2005 doing Tsunami relief before my Crohn's had got really bad.

Well, so much for the burger. I was good for a couple of days then WHAM! I feel like !#@$% again! Back to rice and yogurt! Which is ironic because I started taking yoga and the "yogi's" diet consists of rice and yogurt! tongue

Anyway, after 8 years of doctors telling me you have non-specific whatever, do I really want to call the GI doctor tomorrow? I can't imagine what he is going to do, other than me trying to convince him to do a Cat Scan since that seemed to help diagnose mimik81 (https://www.healingwell.com/community/default.aspx?f=17&m=1020594)
