i have uc.  my daughter has had severe constipation for months now.  i've been told crohn's can also cause constipation.  what can i do for her?  her doc put her on contulose liquid every day.  that didn't work so we went on miralax daily.  i finally gave her milk of mag and that worked, but she immediatly goes back to constipation.  i'm telling you i can't believe what comes out of this 4 year olds body.  it would hurt an adult!  we have an appt with our md today and he's taking an xray to see if there's a blockage.  we have an appt with our 1st pediatric gastro in 3 weeks.  what else can i do in the mean time?

I don't know what that contulose liquid is, but I use a stool softner everyday to keep myself going. Colace is an example. But do talk to her Ped about this first.

the contulose, from what i've been told, is both stool softner and laxative. do they make a children's otc softner?

My Daughter was pretty much born constipated. Sign of things to come?? Her Peds just kept dismissing it over and over again. We found that Citrucel daily worked best for her when she was old enough for it. Would still take her 2-3 days to go. I SO hear you! What came out of my Daughter's tiny backend when she would finally go was pretty darn scary!
I would cringe, but she claimed it didn't really hurt. Always had to keep a plunger nearby for those "special" times.

Daughter was diagnosed with Crohns/Colitis at age 17. She is 25 now and has never really suffered the "D" that so many IBDers do. She still can get constipated! She suffers more from urgency and frequency especially after a meal.

My granddaughter went through a period of being very constipated at about the same age. It  helped to give her added fiber by mixing Metamucil or Citrucel with 8 ounces of water or juice, or another bulk forming laxative or fiber supplements.

Let us know how you make out with the physician. Take care.

How long has she been on the Miralax? It can take 3 or 4 days to kick in, but for me when remicade constipates me I take it daily and it works miracles. If I need extra help I drink a caffienated beverage too.

Hi Gela. My daughter was regular up to the time of potty training. Then she wouldn't go for days. Finally she started having poo accidents. My mind immediately went to CD, since I was constipated all my childhood and then dx'ed with CD. I asked my GI about it and he immediatly (during my appt while I was in the room) called his friend--a ped GI to ask him if he thought she needed to come in.

Long story short, she's been on Miralax (started at full dose daily, in the middle of a long weaning process) for eight months. She drinks it daily, sits on the potty after dinner, and we keep track of all BM's with a sticker on the calendar that we take back to the dr.'s office.

We has seen great improvement--not only with #of BM's, but also her listening to her body. The dr. said that he is seeing more kids with this condition than any sort of disease. He also said that it tends to be the bright kids who have this problem :)

Good luck!

Yogurt might help. Also, more fiber like cooked vegies, fruit, and cereal with high fiber content.

Avoid rice while she is constipated, because it can make it worse.

Boy this really makes me a little nervous for my oldest granddaughter. She has been constipated since she was a baby too. I can remember her mom and me having to help her pass stool sometimes. I sure hope her future does not include Crohns. She takes stool softners or mineral oil to help her go. Her mom says her stools are so large she doesn't know how her little body passes it. None of my girls have Crohns although all 3 have IBS. I pray my baby girl doesn't end up with this hideous disease. Good luck Gela!

Nanners,

I hope Crohn's is not the future for your dear Grandaughter either. I was always having to use some means of helping my Daughter go and amazing how many things did not work all that well. Suppositories as a baby, Castoria as a toddler working our way up to Citrucel. I remember Magnesium Citrate coming right back up when she tried that, mineral oil did not work, nor stool softeners. I think I remember administering an enema or two. Always stayed on top of her diet, lots of fiber hoping that she would just go naturally/regular which she did sometimes. Luckily she was a good healthy, non-picky eater, still is at 25. The large, hard stool used to just flabbergast us. Potty training for bowels was a REAL chore.

I remember one time and one time only my Daughter had "D" and that was the day we brought her home from the hospital after her birth. From that day forward it was pretty much "C" from then on.

Crohnie Yogi,

Yep, my Daughter was considered a bright child! I also found that any change in Daughter's daily routine/schedule would throw her off horribly like going on vacation or staying at Grandma's for a few days. I used to think she had a fear of using "other" toilets.

Something I forgot--straight apple juice works, too. (But I would go to a ped GI just in case.)
