Hello Everybody!
I was diagnosed with crohn in dec 2007, talking with my GI yesterday she said that my asthma and my CD are related since they "share" the same gene, she also said that my CD has not appeared before because all my life I have used meds for asthma, which contains some steroids in its composition, such as prednisone for instance. Actually this is my GI PhD thesis.
Does anybody here have Asthma too, besides CD?

This is an interesting PhD thesis! Good luck!

Yes, my son seems to have mild asthma--"exercise induced". He has been to specialists and uses an inhaler. He has not taken any oral meds long-term for asthma. Those we used on a trial basis did not help his situation, so they were discontinued. He is a swimmer and has only experienced asthma issues occasionally during competition or when the facility's air quality is toxicskull due to poor ventilation.

I have mild asthma as well. It only flares in the winter with cold air, or in physical exercise. I take ratio-salbutamol on an as needed basis. I'm newly diagnosed crohn's patient so i don't know how it affects flare or anything.

This is interesting, in other words the Asthma meds has masked the problems of Crohn's?
Good luck with your GI PhD thesis.

Hi stkitt, that is exactly what was happening, the Asthma meds were masking the symptoms of crohn's, I had my firsts symptoms two years ago, but according to my GI and the colonoscopy Crohn's has started about 4-5 years ago.

I have had asthma as long as I remember. My GI also said that my frequent steroid episodes to manage my asthma kept my CD at bay. My asthma was terrible in the '80s and I was constantly on steroids. But I rarely had gut problems. Once they put me on an oral asthma med and we moved thousands of miles out of Texas, my asthma was much less of a problem. Then my gut issues accelerated. They have even done clinical trials of Remicade to control asthma. I got off all my asthma meds when I was on Remicade.

I've had asthma since I was about 10. When I exercise my body produces something I'm alergic to.

I've used, in the last 25 years, lots of different medicines, and am now on Pulmicort Inhaler & Ventolin.
My asthma improved in the last few years, mainly due to stopping smoking and the Pulmicort.

I never realy had loads of the steroids until about 7 years ago when I gave up the smoking and had 10 or more chest infections in the next two years.  It was about 3 years later I started noticing the first signs of Crohns.

and since then I've had a ton of steroids etc... and my asthma had improved greatly (until recently, as I'm back smoking)

Nothing was mentioned by the specialist about any link between Crohns and Asthma.

I'd be interested to hear how this research goes

Yes, I have asthma and CD. I developed asthma about 17 years ago after a BAD bout with pneumonia. Have had gut issues for 15+ years too, but only diagnosed with CD in the last year. I've been a steroid inhaler for 15 years, but not very much prednisone for the asthma. It would be interesting to know if it's true about the link/relation.

Dx'd CD in August 2007 - 42-yr-old wife and mom
Bad reactions to Entocort, Prednisone and Asacol / Not sure what's next
Currently on Aciphex, probiotic, calcium and multi-vit; and Flovent (for asthma)

I was diagnosed with mild asthma after my second baby....which was about the same time I was diagnosed with CD. I also have chronic sinus problems.
Both my daughters have mild asthma as well....and both are suspected of having CD.
Interesting thesis....keep us posted on your findings.

I also have asthma with crohns, asthma was first very minor, seemed to more allergy related, but now esp this past year the asthma has over rid the crohns and the allergies has gotten worse too. the past year has been real hard on my lungs and health. I would like to know more about this.
May God Bless and keep you in his care.
