I'm 33 years old and was diagnosed with UC officially when i was 26 - though i had it since i was about 19 and it was misdiagnosed.

Anyway, my husband and I have been married for about 2 1/2 years now and we are thinking of having kids. I just started Remicade in October and have had 5 doses so far.

Yesterday i was receiving my 5th infusion and i asked my doctor if the medicine would effect anything regarding pregnancy. He said no that the medicine probably wouldn't but that having a flare (i've been in a flare state for 2 years!!) would probably have an effect on the baby as it develops. Therefore, he advised me to wait to have kids since i'm not even stabalized on my medicine yet. (I have been off of prednisone since October - thank god. The Remicade did help with that, which is great. i had been on it for over a year and couldn't get off of it.) Now i just take colozal on a daily basis. I still have all of the symptoms, always bloody diarehhea, body aches, now some rather painful joint aches (which i'm thinking may be from the Remicade).

Has anyone else been through this? And has anyone else thought of having children while on Remicade? I guess i'll wait and see what happens - and if i get better but i'm starting to think this is as much better as i'm ever going to get.

Just wanted to get other perspectives. Thanks! :)

If you post this over at the UC forum here at HW as well regarding this you'll get some feedback from them too.

Hey Ambrosia, I have Crohn's Colitis. I'm hoping that in about a week I'll be able to tell you that I am expecting my THIRD remicade baby! But... it's too soon to tell. I've had 2 healthy, gorgeous babies on remicade and plan on having 2 more. If you click on my user name you can get my email addy and I'll be happy to share my experiences with you.

I had been in a 2 year flare when I finally got pregnant with my daughter (after 2 miscarriages - I was too sick to sustain a pregnancy and had low progesterone levels). Remicade helped me be well enough to get pregnant and stay pregnant. I also went into remission while pregnant - so the same might happen for you, but... your GI is right - you should be somewhat "stable" first. That doesn't mean you have to wait forever. Email me!
