Hi all,

many of you know about my many recent hospitalizations and surgeries.  I now have 1/4 of my large bowel left and they removed approx 12 inches of my ileum.  I have questran and some days with it I go 1 time other days I lose count.  Last night I took half of an immodium  and awoke at 5am with the burning sensation to run to the bathroom...my grandfather was in the bathroom...I was able to hold it and returned to sleep only to awaken later with the urge and went...that was the start of my day.  I ate an english muffin for breakfast and had some baked fish for lunch (maybe a total of 2oz) and I have gone 5 times bad enough my anus is burning from yesterday but it just gets worse.

I was wondering what you all use when your bum burns that badly and when it bleeds.  I use soft TP and dab with that then use those wet wipes to get the rest off basically I just hold them there for a bit then keep doing that (no rubbing just dabbing) till I no longer get any residue on it.  I dont know what to use on my anus to help in the burning throbbing pain that comes afterwards...it even hurts just to sit on the toilet at this point nevermind when urine gets there.

In the past I have been told I have thrombosed(sp?) hemmies and have been scripted Beta val (it is a cortisone ointment) but it does nothing for the burn or when the skin becomes so raw it bleeds.

help please

Lots of sitz baths with plenty of epsom salts (no, it won't sting, it soothes) until the area is healed, I also gently rub extra virgine olive oil on my perianal crohns skin tags, it also soothes and helps heal fissures (so long as the fissures are not so deep they actually need surgery to repair).

Feel better soon, I know how painful it can be with having anal issues...I feel for ya.

I was actually going to post today and ask advice about my bleeding fissure. It just started last night and this morning the toilet bowl was filled with blood after BM. My D has stopped since surgery (yeah!!) but now I seem to have a "normal" bm one day then not go again for a day or two. So I think my poor bum is just not used to working that way and tore a bit. I see my surgeon and wednesday so I can ask questions then, but knew I could count on you guys for advise. So I will try the sitz baths and olive oil for now. Thanks!

i dont have a sitz bath setup and I am still not allowed to do housework and my grandfatehrs tub you litterally can clean and the cleaning implement turns black...yes he will not let ne one else clean and if he finds you doing it he pushes u out of the way and said he cleans it just fine...not to mention things are old in the house so when they begin having issues he blames me...yup I am fully stressed....ok back to the bathtub... you can literally take a razorblade and scrape the soapscum off of the tub and tileshe claims it is due to bith my husband and I each taking a shower a day ....he claims his pcp said only 1 shower a week at most...yup gross but he claims the tub wasnt like that before yet my whole family knows I am right since they "go to the bathroom" and clean it at times as much as they can in the short amount of time.

Needless to say I have a half gallon of epsom salts but nothing I can put them in to sit in,,,,until I can get in that tub with some heavy duty cleaners a scrub brush, and some gloves etc my butt will not touch that...even the tub mat which hangs on the towel rack in the shower smells mildewy. I wont get into the other stuff he does that is dangerous and fights about but when my husband is home he is a whole diff person than home with me...and Im still on pain patches so i cannot drive

I did get 5 names of psycologists that treat those with chronic illness etc....mainly I need sum1 to talk to unrelated to the family about my grandfather cuz his stressing me out is making me have an unhappy gut

Dragonfly-I know this may be a sensitve issue and you certainly do not need to post answers to these questions but you may want to think about them.
1. Does you grandfathers doctor know about these types of behaviors? they can be a sign of dementia and may be somewhat treatable.
2. Does he qualify for a home health aid? Contact the local community services board and ask about serveces for the elderly If he qualifies the services may be free. (They will clean the bathroom even if he protests)
3. If neccessary contact adult protective services and ask what services they can provide or hook you up with if they think the way he is living is unsafe they may step in to provide assistence.

You could try experimenting with zinc cream, nappy rash cream of Lanisoh (breastfeeding mothers use it on their nipples).

You might also benefit from taking a little container of soapy water to the bathroom with you (an old margarine container or tablet bottle works fine). You can use it to moisten the tp and clean yourself that way. A spray bottle (the sort that you use to water plants) might also help you to wash your behind.

If your sitz bath is too dirty to use, perhaps you could experiment with pouring some salt into a clean rag, wetting it with hot water, and then holding it against your anus for a while. I can't promise it will help, but it might be better than nothing.

Do you have a hand-held shower hose? You could try washing yourself after bms, if practicable.

I'm sorry you have to deal with this.

I.

Go to the baby section in any market or store and find a tube of Desitin Creamy. I swear by it.
After you go to the BR, wipe by dabbing not wiping and then put on a nice layer of the desitin. It will help.
IF you are very inflamed you might try a dab of hydrocrtisone cream on then follow it with the desitin after it
dries.
Ouch, I know haw that burns. The blood is very rough on the tushie tissue, so to speak.

I have a squirt bottle I use post BMs. I know how painfull this is. Sometimes it feels like raw hamburger down there the squirt bottle to rinse and then dabbing with TP & A&D oint. really helps me. I have several BMS  aday so I just keep the bottle filled by the toilet. Hope this helps.

If I can't do a sitz bath (usually if staying at a friend's or at a hotel), I fold a wash cloth 3 times so it's a rectangle and wet it with the hottest water I can stand to touch. Then, I apply to the area. I do this several times. Then, I dry with the hair dryer on the cool setting, and apply corn starch or baby powder. Very soothing.

Sorry about the issues with your granddad. This sounds very serious and some counseling might help. Please think of yourself first. Your granddad may be dealing with some difficult issues.

I had a period of time when I had to stay overnight regularly with a friend---the shower was disgusting. I couldn't exert myself either so I bought X 14 and just sprayed and sprayed. Left it there with the exhaust fan on and then got a bucket. Filled it from the tub and kind of splashed/rinsed all over the place. Then, I just let the shower run. If you do this--or better yet get your husband to do it--, be careful of the fumes. X 14 mildew remover is strong but it really works.

Ah yes, the fire runs are a nightmare. My Dr said to take as much or little questran as works. It's a very safe med. If I'm flaring I double the dose for a day or 2 to quiet things down. As for the rawness, I take some Dr Smiths diaper cream and put some on a wad of TP and stick it tween my cheeks til the burning stops. I think any diaper ointment with zinc oxide will work as well. There have been times that even plain cool water hurts like the fires of hell, so I relate to your pain. Once the burning stops or eases off, I use baby powder after I clean it. But that zinc cream is the only thing that stops the burn for me.

As for the shower/tub situation, see if gramps will let you hang one of those automatic cleaner things in there. I hear they work really good!

Hi,

I know about the pain that you are talking about.  As mentioned before-cream on tissue between the cheeks really helps for me.  Maybe you could purchase a very small kiddie pool for a sitz bath?

Good luck!

I haven't had any fissures or anything, but I do tend to get what I call, "diaper rash" down there. Its red, raw, irritated and burns!! I have been using a diaper cream balm that seems to help,

but does everyone else get this too? I guess its from wiping so much after BM's, but I tell ya, its not fun!! And then I have to explain to my boyfriend why the "sexy time" is not gonna happen this evening.. haha
