I'm just back from a medical appt where I was told that mine had to be taken out and replaced with a new one -- under anaesthetic, of course. Apparently it's standard procedure to do it every twelve months.

I believe them, but it surprises me that I've never heard anyone discussing it here. So... has anybody had it done before? If so, does it hurt afterwards? The surgeon says it won't, but I'm still anxious.

Why would they need to change it??? This Sept., will be 2 years for mine. I would get a second opinion.

I had to have my first seton changed. She only used one small thread and the opening closed up too much. So, after 4 months of having my first seton, I got a thicker, improved seton. It didn't hurt, it actually felt better than the first.

Thanks, folks. I didn't *think* anybody here had had a seton changed each year.

Crohniemom, I don't need a second opinion, and in a way they are the second opinion anyway - I live in the country, and we rely on the city docs for the tricky decisions :-). These people are the top experts, and I trust them.

I asked why they needed to be changed each year and I did get an answer... but unfortunately the surgeon had a thick accent and I didn't really understand him. There wasn't really time for confabbing yesterday - I'll ask more when I'm admitted.

Hmm. Weird.

Maybe it's just standard procedure in Australia then...?

I agree that procedures and standards of care do differ from one country to another.  I wish you the best with getting yours replaced.

Hugs to you sweetie.
