I'd do it if it meant remission.

Well I have had my consultation and I am going to go ahead with it. I need to go to Sydney for 3 days for blood and stool tests, then they decide if they can help me. This will cost about $1100 AUS. Then if all is ok, I go back for the transfusion. It takes 10 working days to do it, the 1st day I have a colonoscopy and if this is ok, they do the 1st transfusion. Then I have a rectal transfusion every morning for the next 9 working days.

Before I start the transfusions I have antibiotics to clean out my system for 2 weeks, low fibre diet and a bowel cleaning prep the day before.

The actual transfusions cost $3445 AUS.

There are no side effects and you have a 50% chance of recovery - I reckon it is work a go. I will make a booking for the tests in June (too much going on in my life to go before then, darn it all), so I will let you know how it goes. Wish me luck :)

GeeBee
Don't know where you live but there are docs here in the US that do this. Also Sharon from Dr. Borody's office can send the info on the procedure to your doc. It is not difficult to do once you have identified a donor and the donor has had all of his testing. I know all of this because I was going to do the procedure when I thought I had resistant c.difficile turned out to be crohn's. In fact, the company that works with Dr. Borody is out of New Jersey and will send you the entire start up kit for $250 blender and all! If you need further info on the docs please email me at nikki0294@aol.com.
good luck!!

Hi Everyone, I just wanted to update you all on where I am at with the Fecal Transfusions. I have just returned from my trip to Sydney to start the first step on the treatment. I had blood tests and a 3 day stool collection. It seems I may be a good candidate for this as I may have C Difficle which reacts very favourably with this treatment.

I need to get my body in remission if at all possible (yeah right, been trying to for the last three years) but if not in remission as good as I can get. Apparantly the treatment works best when there are no ulcers, bleeding or other symptoms so I am increasing my 6MP dose and will go onto antibiotics until the transfusions.

The next step is to get the results of the tests, hopefully these will be good which means I then get as well as possible over the next few months and book in around September for the transfusions. I will be given a gastroscopy and if the doctor doesn't think I am well enough it will stop there, if ok, he will give me my 1st infusion then with the remainder daily over the next 2 weeks.

Wish me luck!

PS I heard about this thru a friend of a friend who was getting the treatment, he has just finished and is very well and very pleased with the results.

OK, I'm not doubting there are good results......I just want to know WHO sits around and THINKS UP THIS STUFF???

I just can't imagine a situation where I would be sitting around, most likely on the potty, and then it strikes me - "I GOT IT, let's take pooh out of one person and put it into someone else".

Again, if it works, great. I just don't have the imagination these researchers do I guess.

Hahahahaha   This cracks me up!!!

I'm really interested to hear more about how this turns out for you GeeBee- and anyone else who's undergone it with success. I'd definitely give it a go if it were available in Canada. It sounds gross, but I have no clue what's going into me with all my other pills and remicade etc. Mind you, I'd also be willing to try worms too - so I guess I'd make a good guinea pig for some researcher!!!!

Just thought that i would update you on where I am at with this. It looks like I wont be going ahead with treatment because the infusions deposit the bacteria in the large bowel and my Crohns is in the small bowel. My specialist thinks that it will have no affect on me as the good bacteria will not make it to where it is needed. I am very disappointed as I thought this might have been the answer. Nevermind, I will move on, I think I will look into LDN and see whether that may help.

Im sorry to hear that GeeBee, but surely they would have known this before you went to all the trouble and expense to see Dr. Borody.
It did sound very promising for you, I hope you find something in your search that gives you relief. Keep us posted on what you do next.
Take care Jo

Wow, this is so interesting!  And wierd!  But I am not surprised... that stuff coming out of our bums is full of all kinds of stuff, good and bad.  I met with an herbalist who said there are small tribes of people (not sure what country) that actually ingest fecal matter to cure ailments.  Now that's wierd!  But the concept is the same.  I think I would do it if it were a family member... like the girl who used her baby's poo.  I have a 2 year old, and I would consider that, but I don't know about anyone else.  How would you go about asking someone for their excrement?  lolol  Anyway, is anyone else completely mortified when they have to give a stool sample??  I remember at the naval hospital in San Diego having to give one out-patient and bring it in to the lab.... there were about 4 people there (all around my age: in their 20's) staring at my poo!! I was so embarrassed!  I just dropped it off and basically ran out of there. lol  Anyway, this is an interesting subject, regardless of how gross.

I am in the U.S. and have already started experimenting with fecal infusions all on my own, and in the privacy of my own home, with nothing more than $1.50 enema bags with tubing and rectal tip, a blender, a funnel and a few bags of medical grade saline. If you search pubmed for terms like "fecal infusion" you will get a few abstracts on Borody's studies, and full text papers are available on the cdd...au address posted earlier on the thread. The more complicated aspects of setting out to do this are: (1) doing the tests that the Borody clinic recommends, in terms of pathogen testing of blood and stool of both donor and recipient, to the tune of a street price of around $1000-$2500 for each person (not to the Borody clinic but to wherever you have the tests done) if you honestly want to do all the tests they (the Australian clinic) say are needed; and (2) obtaining several antibiotics and taking those antibiotics for a 10 day or so course prior to doing the infusions. I compromised on the tests but did get myself (paid by my insurance) and my donor- my girlfriend (paid for out of pocket as she didn't want to get her insurance involved) tested for a bunch of things, just not all of those listed.  I absolutely refuse to do the antibiotic regimen because I know it would flare me. If you contact the Borody clinic,it is my understanding they will set up a phone consult for $100, get your info. and send you their official instructions and yay or nay your donor based on test results.  The stool from the donor has to go IMMEDIATELY, i.e. within a few minutes, into the infusion so the domnor has to basically be someone you wake up with in the morning.  I have not contacted the CDD, however, and am doing this purely based on information gleaned from their published papers plus from email contact with others who have done the infusions. I have UC, at least officially, and I do not know of Crohn's benefiting but who knows. I have really only done one test infusion to date- I tried a second infusion two weeks later but the saline/stool mixture was too thick and it didn't flow, so there is a learning curve. I may well lose my colon before fall if things don't improve, so I don't feel there is anything to lose by squirting some poop up my butt for a few days. If it works, it's because healthy human stool is the ultimate probiotic, containing hundreds, maybe thousands of probiotic strains that can actually colonize the gut permanently, unlike commercial probiotics which are few in number, die off going through the stomach, and only colonize the lumen briefly.
