I have always had to drink a contrast with an abd CT. It seems as outpatient and ER CTs it is the white barium, yet it is thinner than upper gi barium. When I have had them done while a patient it was a different type dye mixed with anoption of clear beverage. I went through 22 ABD CT scans from Oct 06 tilFeb 08. I also had a CTE and a MRIE within that time whichalso have a barium drink, those are the same size of egular ct ones but the timeframe to drink them is drastically less.

When I have done CT scans its been some kind of dye mixed with some kind of fruit juice. I really didn"t think it was that bad>

I just had that exact test yesterday morning. I had to pick up a small bottle of "contrast" at the pharmacy the day before. The contrast has no flavor, and is mixed with 48oz of water. I drank 12oz with dinner the night before (yes, dinner! No clear liquid nonsense!), and then I drank 12oz every half hour for 1.5 hours immediately before the scan. Other than a little nausea from drinking so much water first thing in the morning - it really wasn't bad. No goopy gaggy stuff like they give you for small-bowel follow through x rays and what not.

Good luck! It's a quick thing - over before ya know it.

When I have had an abdominal CT scan they gave me some fizzy stuff that kinda tasted like orange soda, and I drank it before the procedure. It was nothing compared to the barium I have had to drink on several occassions when having an upper GI...yuck!!

Thanks everyone, I had my scan this morning and had to drink the crap and have the iv dye. I wasn't home an hour before the doctors office called. They want me to up my prednisone from 40mg to 60mg.......ewwww. I hate the stuff. I have had 3 remicade treatments so far and I guess it isn't working. They told me he would tell me more about what the test said on monday, so I am kinda worried.I am wondering what the scan showed

Thank you for helping me.
