Hi all,
I keep reading in CD references that eye problems are common with CD. Lately I have had a lot of red and itching eyes and one day my eyeball hurt. Is this what the references are refering to? Does anyone know what the classic eye problems are with CD? I hope you all feel better tomorrow than you did today.

I feel a whole lot more the way I do now than I did a little while ago.

Hello Johnny,

This is Kitt. :-)   The inflammation that is wreaking havoc in your gut can also cause complications in other parts of your body, including your eyes.

Eye problems associated with Crohn's include ulcers on the cornea and inflammation of the iris, blood vessels, and "whites" of the eyes, which can be painful and may affect your vision.

May I suggest you followed up with your physician re the eye problems.

Take care and keep posting.

See a good opthamalogist one familiar with autoimmune diseases of the eye (get your GI or a Rhuemy to recommend one) immediately. Some of these eye problems can cause loss of vision if not treated and they do not go away on their own (mostly) but with treatment most of them clear up well with no lasting problems.

Hi Az,

I have Uveitis...it is connected to my Crohn's. I get red eyes that are ichy, find bright light bothers them, they do weep at times and others they are really dry. I have been told from eye specialist that they like my ankylosing spondylitis precursors to a crohn's flair. Though they can also flare up during a crohn's flare.

I would suggest that you get to a specialist right away. Like suggested you need to have a referal put through from your GP or a Rhume. (If you are in Canada; outside of Canada I don't know). If you don't you can end up becoming blind.

I wish you the best of luck to you.

There was another thread on eye problems, just a few days ago.
Dave D

Retired male in late 60's. Perforated Colon in 92. Diagnosed as Ulcerative Colitis in 93. Uncontrolled flareup in 97 dictated J-pouch surgery. 04 Capsule endoscopy diagnosed as Crohns not UC. Emergency surgery in 05 to remove lodged camera capsule. Biopsies positively diagnosed Crohns at that time. 12/06 Unsucessfully tried Naltrexone(LDN). 2/07 developed scleritis of the eye, tearing and detaching the retina. Treated with high doses of Prednisone. 6/07 Thought eye was healing and started taking Entocort counting on the residual (non-systemic portion) as treating the eye. Wrong. In October eye was not stabilized. 11/07 Started Remicade to try and reduce the ocular inflamation of the Scleritis since I had been requiring more and more Prednisone to keep the eye quiet. 12/07, retina tares and detaches again. Started Remicade every 4 weeks plus 20mg of Prednisone per day. Six months and seven infusions later, good eye is back to 20/14. Bad eye is 20/70. Set for cataract surgery in June 08 on bad eye. Should return to a correcable visionary level. Life looks good (literally) today.
Married with 4 grandkids.

Thank you all for your responses. I have an appointment with my doc in a few days and will get a referal.
