Does anyone know of another probiotic that contains saccharomyces boulardii other than florastor.  For some reason the florastor gives me the stomach rumbles and mucus too.  I wanted to have something on hand in case I ever need an antibiotic.  Does this happen to anyone else who takes florastor??

Thanks

Chris

Check out VSL #3.  You can go on the website and check the ingredients, but a lot of people with Crohn's find it helpful.  I find it gets me constipated, but I use it when I'm having D.

Chris, this has been reported here on many occasions--stomach rumbles/excessive gas from florastor. Now, I'm sure this could be debated, but Elaine Gottschall, author of "Breaking the Vicious Cycle" and proponent of the Specific Carbohydrate Diet, claimed Saccharomyces boulardii is the one probiotic that folks with UC or Crohn's should NOT take because it is a probiotic in the yeast family. Candida (yeast overgrowth) is yet another possible culprit with Crohn's, so we're not taking any chances. I also trust Elaine's years as "a biochemist and cell biologist, specializing in the study of the effect of food on the human body."

Since I read that information, I have intentionally stayed away from any probiotic with S. boulardii in it. That said, there aren't very many out there. Believe me, I've checked. You might like to try another brand. I read somewhere to try a multi-strain brand with 20 billion or more cfu. (Any less is thought to be a drop in the bucket since our intestines have something like 3 trillion living organisms hanging out...) VSL#3 as gumby recommended, would be especially good during/after an antibiotic, but there are other good brands on the market. We use Theralac. Keep in mind that most of the really good brands need to be refrigerated and have a shelf life, so if you are only going to use it ONLY if you take an antibiotic, you may want to wait until that happens before you buy one. (I would recommend taking one all the time, though!!!:-))

I do take VSL#3 now but the pill form as the sachets with corn starch did the rumbling thing. It is interesting the yeast connection you mention. As I still try to figure out what I can and can't eat...I notice wheat products really give me rumbles and diarrhea...at least I thought it was the wheat because sourdough bread is fine. Maybe it is the yeast and not the wheat. I am going to try to increase the VSL to see if that makes a difference. I just bought the book you mentioned about the SCD diet. Thanks for your info.!!

Also consider the fact that a certain amount of rumbling may be normal as your body adjusts to the friendly bacteria and kicks out the unfriendly. (Rather than increasing, you might want to decrease or stay the same for a bit while your body adjusts...just a thought) That said, lots of folks say VSL seems a bit strong for them. My son used it during/after a round of antibiotic and said it took him from his usual 3 down to about 1 bm a day. He didn't appreciate that! (Go figure...) Lots of people here seem to report the same thing--fewer bms from VSL. Of course if you need fewer....

As you get into your book, consider ordering a yogurt machine. We got ours about 1 month ago (wish I'd gotten it sooner) and everyone in the family is benefiting from the extra probiotics--700 billion cfu in each cup!!! And very fresh! We make smoothies with it! :-)

Good luck!!!

I take Florastor when on antibiotics and it seems to help.  I notice the bloat and rumbles for the first few days as the gut gets used to it.  I'll take 2/day while on the antibiotic and then drop to 1/day for a week afterwards.

My doctor also told me about a new one called "Align".  Looks pricey though.

Which yogurt machine did you purchase? Is it difficult to make the homemade stuff?

Thanks

Hi Nikki, I purchased the Yogourmet (took me a while to get the play on words in the spelling!). I recommend purchasing it from lucyskitchenshop.com because you can also purchase the yogurt starter and an extra yogurt container from them. (We really need the extra container at the rate we're going through it!) They also include the precise SCD legal directions for making the yogurt, which are a bit different than traditional yogurt directions (although these directions can be found on the SCD website). They are just really nice there, too, and cater to folks with UC and CD.

You may have noticed that my signature says I am cooking challenged. Keep that in mind while I tell you how easy it is to make. You boil milk (I use a make-shift double boiler because I only cook things on HIGH and tend to scorch or burn things a lot), cool the milk, add the yogurt starter and stir until it's dissolved, and place the container inside the unit that ferments (warms) the yogurt for 24 hours. That's all there is to it! Very easy! After the 24 hours you chill it in the fridge for 8 hours. Super simple!

Did I mention all the lactose is eaten up during the extended fermentation process? This is good, as many CDers are lactose intolerant.

Hope that helps!
