Has anyone experienced a perforated bowel, either from obstruction or drugs?
Do you know if it could happen from over eating?  I can't seem to find any answers online.
I have been on & off Pred for 9 months now due to a stricture.  My GI wants me to start Humira, but I have had so much trouble with different drugs this past year, I'm afraid to try it.  The only other alternative is a third surgery.  I want to just wean from the Pred and try avoiding meat and large meals and see what develops, but worry that a perforation might occur. Comments welcome! Thank you.

I had a perforation back in 1990.  That was how I was diagnosed with CD.  Mine was from an obstruction that I did not know I had.  Since I did not know I had CD, I was eating high bran muffins and salads every day.  I ruptured and waited a few days before ended up in the ER poisoning my insides.  It was not the quantity of food, but the roughage of it that lead to my perforation.  No medical care prior to this probably meant I had some weakened areas even before the perforation too.

I can't help much on the meds advice.  After my perforation and resection, I was pretty much "normal" but I ate gentle foods for many years and did not cheat on the diet.  Normal being lots of D, but not much pain.  I am a lucky crohnie.  I was just on Pentasa from 1990 to now with only a few short bouts of prednisone.  You sound like you are in a different point in your disease so you may have issues I never had.

Dx'd '90 (emergency rupture), symptoms ignored long before that, '03 fistulas and bad flagyl reactions, B12 weekly, Pentasa [until I surrender to the bigger meds]
I'm riding on the escalator of life....

my perforation was from a biopsy taken during a colonoscopy. found out about 2 hours after being discharged cos i couldnt stand up straight (buckled over in pain) and could hardly breath. i checked myself in for emergency exploratory surgery. as for food or drugs, no, you got me on that one.

I perforated in 1992, due to "diverticulitis." I had not yet been DX'd as Ulcerative Colitis or Crohns as DX'd today. What I had was a gut infection with a low grade fever. When my colon let go, I started having horrible groin BM pains. My Dr. did not recognise what hd happened and kept me on on full diet. Four days later, I was transfered to a hospital where I had emergency surgery to resection the colon and clean up the gangrein and peritonitis. Shortly before the surgery I went into shock and was given a ring side seat at watching the surgery from above through an out-of-body experience.

Fortunately, only the good die young and after a month in the ICU, plus another week in the hospital, I was good to go. (Back to life thst is.)

Retired male in late 60's. Perforated Colon in 92. Diagnosed as Ulcerative Colitis in 93. Uncontrolled flareup in 97 dictated J-pouch surgery. 04 Capsule endoscopy diagnosed as Crohns not UC. Emergency surgery in 05 to remove lodged camera capsule. Biopsies positively diagnosed Crohns at that time. 12/06 Unsucessfully tried Naltrexone(LDN). 2/07 developed scleritis of the eye, tearing and detaching the retina. Treated with high doses of Prednisone. 6/07 Thought eye was healing and started taking Entocort counting on the residual (non-systemic portion) as treating the eye. Wrong. In October eye was not stabilized. 11/07 Started Remicade to try and reduce the ocular inflamation of the Scleritis since I had been requiring more and more Prednisone to keep the eye quiet. 12/07, retina tares and detaches again. Started Remicade every 4 weeks plus 20mg of Prednisone per day. Six months and seven infusions later, good eye is back to 20/14. Bad eye is 20/70. Set for cataract surgery in June 08 on bad eye. Should return to a correcable visionary level. Life looks good (literally) today.
Married with 4 grandkids.

Thanks for sharing - at least it makes me hopeful that if a perf occurs, I'll have warning (pain)
and time to get to the hospital.
