Two  months ago I had a TI resection laproscopically.  One week later it let go and got infected--they had to open me up and do a temporary ileostomy.  I was in the hospital an additional 20 days.
Because my colon was too short it had to be anchored with a rubber tube that comes through the skin and just hangs.  Initially there was a bag but nothing was coming out.  Sometimes black stinky material comes out the skin surface such that I have to change the dressing twice a day and the skin is sore around the tube.  The Dr. says it's mucus.
Anyhow, here's my question:  I haven't passed anything out my rectum since the surgery although I sometimes feel a vague urge, but I'm afraid to try.  (My abdomen is still sore.)  Does anybody with an ostomy ever pass anything out their rectum?

Hopefully someone will come along soon to help answer your question, but you should definitely post it at the ostomy board here at HW (near the bottom of the forum quick jump).

Feel better soon :)

Yes, if you still have all your parts that is very normal. Your colon is still producing mucus so you feel the urge b/c something really is there. When I had a temp. I still every blue moon still pass poo out my rectum as well. Don't worry--what you feel is totally normal!

Yes, unfortunately mucus is still produced and has to go somewhere.  And just as everyone is different in how Crohn's affects them, mucus is the same way.  There are a couple threads on the ostomy forum that discuss it, if you are interested.  I myself only passed mucus every couple of weeks and it was never too much.  I could tell when it was getting ready to pass and could go to the bathroom.  You shouldn't have to work to hard to get it to pass, so it shouldn't hurt your abdomen.

I hope you are feeling better!

I had a colostomy 3 years due to perforated colon, ever since I have passed mucous daily,I sit on the toilet when I feel the urge and a small mucous ball passes.I talked to my GI about it and he said it is normal.Since i have the perianal crohn`s I suspect that has some bearing on it.Hope this helps.
