My husband does an annual reunion w/ his high school guy friends. It is this weekend in Vegas. Tonight (tuesday 11pm) he learns their girlfriends are going. We live in Maine. He can get me a flight from Boston to Vegas Thursday night and Vegas to Maine Sunday night. I know I just survived Singapore but I had such a long time to prepare. One of my worst flights was over the Rocky's. I don't know if I can do that again. Is it worth it to pay $600 to fly to Vegas for the weekend? Did I mention that his friend is a manager at a big hotel and we will all stay in a huge suite w/ discounts and reservations at the best resturants?

This is all hinging on me getting Friday off from work and finding a dog sitter. What do I do!!!!

I am so nervous with my self destructive what ifs.  I have been naseaus lately...what if.  Our receptionist has the flu.  What if.  Do I even have enough Xanax to survive flying?? What if....

well, as much as I have flight panics too I just remember that at least there is always bathrooms on board and I choose the aisle seats ALWAYS to make sure no one is in my way if I need to make a run for it...
and hotels always have bathrooms around too....and restaurants....so its not like you'll be completely out of the way of those needs ever.
do you have time to get to your doc for more meds?
but think of the fun too that vegas would be, the sights and sounds, a huge suite to enjoy with your husband, I do hope all goes well! and hopefully you don't catch a flu either!

Sounds like fun! I'd go, I won't let Crohn's hold me back.

I actually just flew last week, and it was way better then those car rides we used to take. Nothing like 10 hours in the a car, in the middle of no where, no bathrooms, to make a Crohn's patient anxious. LOL Flying was wonderful, faster, and I did great. Had a wonderful trip, and I'm sorry I even worried about it. We have to have some quality of life, and with Crohn's it's always a risk or a chace that we take when we go anywhere. But I refuse to let this thing make me housebound again.

I'm not going to add to the general push here to get you to go Fitzy. But then, I'm not going to tell you not to go either. I'm going to ask you what is it your gut and your intellect are telling you? I don't mean the anxiety talking, I mean that core quietness from which sprngs our intuition, our instinctive knowing.

I hear doubts in your post about the wisdom of taking this trip, but I don't know if that is anxiety or rooted unease. Are you feeling well right now? What are the work implications if you come back from the trip sick? Can you build on the luxury of knowing that, if it takes more out of you than you expect, that you can take a few days off next week? Or is your work situation such that you feel you must get back to work for Monday? What about your recent past. Were your fears about your trip justified" Or in the end did everything go ok?

On the other hand, what is the cost of not going? In terms of self-anger, sadness, frustration. Living with crohn's disease is an exquisite balancing act. The only way to maintain the balance is to stay rooted in our reality. We can't live in a world of "should be able tos". But we also can't allow fear to govern our decisions.

So make your decision based on what your head and your heart tell you and be at peace. Go for yourself, or don't go for yourself. Either way you will be the winner.

I say go go go! Even if you are ill, once you're there you get to be sick in a really plush hotel-got to be worth it!!

Having said that, if you decide not to go don't beat yourself up about it, have a lovely relaxing weekend at home x

Thanks everyone.  My husband and I decided I should not go.  It is just too last minute and we have way too many complications.  Belle your post was great.  I would have landed at midnight on Sunday, had a 45 minute drive home, and had to be back at work at 8:30am on Monday.  I am going camping later this month and I am driving w/ my hubby to SC to see his family July 3rd.  I really can't afford to miss work right now.

It just seemed like way too much money to spend for such a short trip too.  Financially it would not be a wise decision.  As a summer employee I also don't have paid sick/vacation time so I take a cut from my income w/ each day I take off.  My dog is also a rescue and really can't stay at a kennel.  I have never tried but she has seperation anxiety and is petrified of men (will shake and pee).  So I only leave her with trusted friends or family when I go away and it is just such short notice to spring on my dear neighbor.

My most recent trips (Singapore, Phuket, DC) were most definitly worth it!! My last flight to Vegas, not as much.  But I was also very sick then.

Crohns wise I have been well lately but I have been feeling off the last couple days.  Part of me thinks it is my BC.  My doc has been switching it around to lower side effects.  It could be this heat wave, it could be the flu other people at my office have had.  I would hate to fly out there and then puke all weekend.

I did find more xanax (I had a refill for my last flight I didn't use).  But, I am so afraid of flying that it usually takes me a lot of mental preparation to do it.  My flight back would involve a Jet Blue layover in JFK (where they frequently have the problem of sitting on the tarmac for hours with no bathroom access). Worrying about that alone sucks.

I had been looking forward to this weekend alone to sunbathe and catch up on sleep and get a haircut.  Thats what I'll be doing.  I wouldn't call this one crohns holding me back.  Just a lot of life stuff piled up holding me back lol.  Its too bad because if they had told him ahead of time that it wasn't "just the guys" we could have planned accordingly and made it work.

I am glad you were able to make the right decision for you. I personally would have passed as I just can't do things on short notice. I too have to prepare myself for anything or I do get anxious too. And Bellenstein well said as always.
