He seemed a little annoyed with the lack of a plan that I got from my GI to taper off the pred, and was surprised I was still on it (guess he thought I was just gonna do a short dose). But then again I was annoyed with that GI as well.

So he wrote out a big old plan for me, as he agrees I'm having withdrawl symptoms. I hope it's slow enough. He said we could go to 1 mg a week if we have to, but he thinks this will work.

I'm at 10 today, so tomorrow he wants me to go down to 8 mg for the next 5 days. Then 7 mg for 2 days, then 6 mg for 5 days. Then 5 mg for 2 day. Then 4 mg for 3 days, 3 mg for 3 days, 2 mg for 3 days, 1 mg for 3 days, then off. Kinda crazy huh? Never heard of this taper schedule. But better then what my GI told me, which was pretty much nothing. LOL I just hope I can taper like this with no problems! Wish me luck!

It is I know! LOL I had been doing 5 mg a week. I started to get withdrawl symptoms at 10 mg, and got worse at 5 mg, and even sicker at 2.5 mg last week. Felt really bad, with terrible headaches. So I guess he figures this will help me get off these last 10 mg without getting sick. I hope he's right, my fingers are crossed anyway! LOL

Hey Jen! Actually I only have had a couple of rounds of pred in my 18 years, but your taper sounds similar to what my fav doc did oh so many years ago. Maybe it's not so unique :-)
I hope it works for you!
Dx'd '90 (emergency rupture), symptoms ignored long before that, '03 fistulas and bad flagyl reactions, B12 weekly, Pentasa [until I surrender to the bigger meds]

We should start a Tapering support group! LOL It is scary though isn't it?

At this point I just don't know what is normal to be feeling, and what is considered withdrawl symptoms, that I need to call my doctor for. I'm sure it's okay to feel kinda crappy going off of it, but at what point is it a danger sign? I just hope this is slow enough. I guess I was kinda hoping for 1 mg a week, even though I know that would take forever to go completely off of it. He gave me just enough pills to do it his way, so I guess I don't have a choice there. LOL

Sounds a little crazy but slow enough that it may work. My doc had me do 5 mgs a week until I got to 10 then really slow after that but nothing quite so irregular.
