I feel pretty lucky after reading one this site and others what all the symptoms of Crohn's can be. I was diagnosed about 2 yeas ago with Crohn's after a 2nd occurence of erythema nodosum (didn't know what caused that 2 years before when I had it the first time...luckily I saw a different doctor that sent me for a colonoscopy..) Anyway, I am taking Asacol (1 three times a day) and Imuran (3 one time a day... which I just stopped to see how I feel before trying to get pregnant). The meds seem to keep everything under control. No ED in 2 years, no swollen joints, few cramps, little (if any) diarrhea, no surgeries, no hospital time.
about once a month though, something gets me. I am not sure if it is something I eat, but within a few hours, I am nauseous and am throwing up whatever I ate. I then can't even keep water down for hours until it passes. Sometimes this happens without cramping.  The other night though, I had the worst cramps I have had in months that lasted off and on for about 8 hours (the worst being when my abdominal area cramped every few minutes). The next day I was fine. I was just tired, and I stuck to bland foods for a day.
I know that vomiting can be a sign of blockage, but it is so rare and random when it happens..and I can usually guess what I ate that caused it (or if I ate too much...). Do any of you have vomiting as a symptom? I was originally diagnosed with IBS before Crohn's. I was orginally told that was what caused the cramps I was having. Also, I have been off the Imuran for almost 2 weeks, so maybe I just need to be extra careful what I eat now. I just wasn't sure what was causing the vomiting. It frustrates me becuase I have been feeling great most of the time...then suddenly I don't. What do you think?

Greetings and welcome, golden06.

I cannot speak on blockage. For me, pain, nausea and the big D are the norm...always on the opposite end of constipation. During flares the nausea gets horrible and leads to vomiting. I take Phenergan for it. Phenergan is the most effective medidation I got from my GI. You should ask your GI doctor about it.

Good luck to you.

Anytime I have nausea and vomiting I have had a blockage. And this last one you had sure sounds like you might have had at least a partial obstruction.

As far as medications go, I believe there are women on this board that have had babies while on Imuran, 6mp, Remicade and Humira. Did you talk with your GI and a highrisk OB before going off your meds? It is my understanding that most docs prefer you stay on meds to keep your Crohns in check. A healthy mom makes for a healthier baby. I am wondering if you are starting to flare already because you quit the Imuran.

Hopefully, one of the pregnant or new Mom's will be along soon to discuss that more with you. Good luck!

Hi Nanners,

Thanks for your reply. I did meet with a Perinatologist when we decided we wanted to get pregnant, and my GI doctor agreed to do a 3 month trial off of Imuran (I am staying on Asacol) to see how I do. I have read other posts about staing on meds throughout pregnancy and how both mother and baby were fine. I guess I am just scared of the risk.

I do have a follow up with my GI soon. I will talk with him about the vomiting. I have before, and he didn't seem concerned. My bloodwork is always good, I'm not losing weight, I only have to go the the bathroom 1-3 times a day (and it is rarely, if ever, diarrhea), etc. I think he is optimistic. Please though, anything all of you can tell me about your experiences would be very helpful. Thanks so much!

Do you know why you get sick so often? I know if I eat too much or something too rich, I may get sick. Then, once I get it out of my system, I am fine. I felt great the next day, just like usual. I don't always have cramps when I am sick either. The other night, when my cramps were so bad, I did have a salad (which often does not bother me...just if I eat one numerous days in a row) that had a tiny bit or corn on it (which has bothered me in the past). And, it's not too often. I was thinking about it, and I have gotten sick about every 30 days in June, July, and now in August. I guess it just frustrates me because I usually feel so well, and then suddenly I cannot keep down what I have eaten.
