Hi my name is Shelley.  I am 34 and was recently diagnosed with crohn's for the second time.
The first time was when I was pregnant with my 4th child.  Obviously they could NOT do a scope.  Shortly after delivery they did though.  I don't think they found anything.  BUT...that was after months on Prednisone (40mg) and I couldn't taper or the  symptoms returned.  I was on Asacol also then.  I had so many difficulties with that pregnancy.  After them finding nothing, I went to a different doctor and he did another scope (a month after the first).  It was actually my 3rd in my life.  I have had tummy/gut issues my whole life.  He said, "oh you jsut have IBS".
Fast forward 4.5yrs (yes I'm lucky) the blood and mucus started again.  I got in to the doc and he ordered a scope (#4).  They found lots of inflamation and did biopsies.  He found colitis and put me on pentasa.  When the biopsies came back he wasn't 100% sure.  I guess since Iw as reactign to meds, gave me a crohn's diagnosis.  My mom has crohn's.  She had a resection RIGHT after she delivered me.
The pentasa seems to work somewhat, but it is starting to come in cycles.  Of course it hasnt' been super consistent up until now.  It just clicked.  A week before my period the pain comes.  I ahve endo too, so I don't like to have MORE pain around that time.  So for two months it has been worse.  I mostly get the PAIN, not the runs.  The painis hard to explain, I bet it is different for everyone.  Mostly it is in my back and radiates to the front (similar to back labor).  The first time I experienced this  i was on a birth control pill (NOT AROUND MY PERIOD) the Gastro ordered a cat scan!  Found nothing.  Blood tests show nothing.  I appear FINE.
I am currently on day 10 of the pain and day 6 of my period.  This has been the worst pain so far.  It has lasted the longest too.  I have 5 kids (10-2) and a husband that works long hours.  I CAN'T be down like this.
Fortunately or UN, I see the gastro tomorrow.  I HATE meds.  I am a natural remedy girl and have nothing to help.  I can't do pain meds...I need to be awake!
I wish i was a ray of sunshine, but I'm  more like confused confused confused confused confused confused smhair smhair smhair

First, welcome to HealingWell! ( Sorry you have to be here!). A great place for support!
My advice is GET the pain meds! Why suffer? BTW, drowsiness usually wears off after a couple-few days usage. You WILL NOT become a zombie.
I was dxed with this DD just around your age, BTW. It sucks that it hits often in the prime of life!

Hi Shelley,

And welcome to Healingwell. Sorry you have to join our club though. I agree with Matthew, get the pain meds. No one should have to suffer with the pain we go thru. Some folks use Tramadol/Ultram and it doesn't make them as loopy. I personally can't take those cuz they upset my tender tummy for some reason. But others have had great luck with them. I take Percoset for my pain. But I only take 1/2 tab at a time. And that helps enough to calm the pain but not make me loopy.

And that time of the month was miserable for me too. about 10+ years ago (had all the kids I wanted) I had a complete hysterectomy. In my eyes at least, it was the best thing I ever did. I use to be miserable for 3 weeks out of every month. Since the hysterectomy one less thing to worry about with this DD (darned disease):)

Welcome Shelley!

Just a word of advice, I tried doing the "natural" thing and it didn't work for me. I didn't want to go on 6-MP, had to go on it. Didn't want to go on Remicade-had to go on it. Hate the prednisone, but have to be on it to stay in remission. I just had to come to the realization that if I wanted my life back I had to go on the meds. I wish I didn't need them, but it is what it is and we just have to make due with what we're given. Good luck with everything and keep us posted!
