As some of you know last week I had a flare after being in remission for a  year. Well thinking back the last few weeks have been rough as my joints hurt so bad and the only way I can go into work is to wear ballet like slippers because shoes kill my feet and legs. Well with that being said, I had called the dr and he wants to see me but can't give me an appt till Oct grrrrrrr. but they wanted me to cancel my plans with my sister that I haven't seen in ages to come in this past monday, well no way I can deal with it as it isn't that bad yet. Well they did call in meds for me and they know I can't take Pentasa because I literaly throw up if I take that many pills and then I don't eat. Well he called in Pentasa, and it will cost me over 100 bucks because of my yearly deductable from insurance. I don't want to spend that much if the dr will switch me after I start vomitting and waste it so my question is...........
Is there other drugs I can take to maintain my remission. My surgeon suggested Humira before the surgery as a drug for after and I thought that was only for flaring Cronnies. I am calling on thursday and having them go thru everyday of the schedule to see if there is a slot for a sick one because I can't make it through another day of work without loosing it at some point and I want to have all the info I need before hand so I can try to pull off that I got a little smart over the course of a year, then again if i was that smart I would have been taking my meds from day one post surgery huh

I see that many of us have read your note and on one has responded yet. Yes, Remicade and Humira are both for getting flares under control, but they are also considered maintaince drugs. I take Remicade and Imuran to keep myself comfortable. You could look at the Remicade site, there is useful information there. I have never had to take Pentasa. Your doc could have just called in something that he always knows works with others and forgot you cannot take Pentasa.

Good luck on getting an appointment.

Are you allergic to pentasa or is it just you have trouble swallowing all those pills? Pentasa now comes in 500's too so instead of taking 16 per day you only take 8. What if you space them out a little. Take one pill, wait five minutes, take the next pill, etc. I pop all 4 in my mouth at once and swallow but if that is what is making you gag take your time with it. And why do you have to take it on an empty stomach? I wait until after I get to work, eat a little something, and then take it.

As far as your insurance it is just a deductible right? After you pay the first $100 you don't have to pay that again until the next year. No matter what drug you were put on you would face that anyway. Might as well just get the deductible out of the way. I know $100 is a lot of money but its not like each rx is going to cost you that much. Only the first one.

As important as maintenence meds are, I am not sure how much that will help with your joint pain though.
26 Year old married female law student (last year!!). Diagnosed w/ CD 4 years ago, IBS for over 10 years before that, which was probably the CD. I am sort of lactose intollerant too but can handle anything cultured and do well w/ lactose pills and lactaid. For crohns I am currently on Pentasa 4 pills/4x day and hysociamine prn. I also have bad acid reflux and have been on PPI's since age 13. I have been through prilosec, prevacid, and nexium. Currently I am on Protonix in the morning and Zantac at night. I also take a birth control pill to allow some fun in my life.
