Is there any such thing as a fav flare diet?  Ok, serious now.

I will swear by this:   plain basmati boiled rice (boiled to death!) add some broc florets to the rice (about 10 min into cooking) and boil them to death.  put a skinless boneless chicken breast into oven, covered, at low heat and cook (should take at least 45 min).  put all this together with a little salt.

yum yum!!  but it works for me and several others around me that I know.

hope this helps you too!

all the best

Flare recipe?
Canned soup, a bowl, and a microwave.

I'm glad you asked though because that right there is a clear indicator of the to find something healthier.

Sorry I can't help :(

Mashed potatoes with a little butter and sea salt, well-cooked veggies with butter and sea salt, turkey scallopini cooked in a pan with a little olive oil, sea salt, garlic and onions, and homemade cranberry sauce sweetened with honey.

Poached eggs on white toast (buttered); or, chicken breast meat boiled w/ garlic & onion powder & sea salt. Make flour gravy and hot bisquits.

Boy if I was flaring I could not eat any of the above except the most blandest of items. When flaring I eat very bland. Plain, plain and more plain.

I try to stick to "white" foods, its seems a lot of the above are just that too.
If Im really bad just saltines, if I can tolerate a bit more I whip this up:-
bowl of cooked rice
can of tuna - any flavour
lemon juice
season to taste and if I think I can tolerate it. cheese
I call it my poor mans risotto, just toss it all together. tastes good hot or cold.
Good idea for a thread Broomhilda, I will be checking back for some ideas too.

Well considering I am going through a good flare right now.....
Store brand ensure is a staple when I can't tolerate solids. Other than that, VERY mushy outmeal with a little butter and brown sugar and toast with peanut butter are my faves!!

Hi Broom as I recall it was pred. pred. and more pred. I just sticked to low residue ,ensure. Now for being better and being able to eat I loved macaroni and mushroom soup mixed or mixed with cream of chicken soup and maybe tuna thrown in for good taste. Kept the appetite up and eating. How are you doing are you flaring? Been missing you. lol gail

Hey Gail! Doing pretty well except for this flare. All bloodwork seems to be normal so I'll call this one a bout of IBS. Been going on about 3 weeks now and I can't seem to get it under control yet. I'm eating small amounts every 2-3 hours but everytime I go to the bathroom I'm hungry again. Thank God I'm not on pred to boot! I'm with Ivy, I think mashed potatoes is my favorite too. I smother them in Heinz fat free chicken gravy that comes in a jar and boy it sure tastes like steak to me! I also make a rice pudding with vanilla soy milk, honey and cinnamon (no raisins). Hmmm, let's see, Gerber baby rice cereal mixed with a little sea salt and some of the newer flavored no sugar applesauces are good too. I can't touch oatmeal, ever! If I am feeling really brave I might try homemade mac & cheese made with olive oil based butter and vermont white cheddar cheese topped off with bread crumbs.

For me it's KFC mashed potatoes. I can't tolerate Ensure so I go for the kids Pediasure and taste pretty good too.

I get a can of condensed cream of potato soup and add about 1/4 can of milk. Add some extra pre-cooked (canned whole potatoes) that have been cut small. Let it simmer for 10 minutes on the stove. And I chew up the little potato bits real good.

This may sound strange, but try it! You'll like it!! Take about 1 cup of pre-cooked squash (hubbard or similar - I always have some in the fridge) add one egg and about 2 tbsp of almond butter. Blend the three together with salt to taste and a generous dash of Chinese 5 spice or cinnamon. Fry in a 12" pan for about 6 - 8 min with just a little olive oil (about 2 tsp) and flip (not usually done without breaking the "souffle"). It is somewhere between a pancake and scrambled eggs. Can be eaten plain or with a bit of butter. Yiddish reply: "So I tried it. I nearly died!"

mashed potatoes, steamed chicken, noodle soup, crackers, tea, white rice.  That's about it.  If I'm not too bad, I eat some cream cheese too.

similar to the comment from yellow rose;

Congee or rice porridge.  It is easy to make in a crock pot. Put up the soup before going to bed and awaken to this satisfying porridge. (Or, put it up before going to work and the soup will be ready when you come home.)  I suggest using chicken stock....it is also great if you use peeled shrimp in place of the chicken.

Serves 2

½ cup rice (or barley)
4 cups water or stock
1 bay leaf
1 teaspoon minced ginger
½ teaspoon sea salt
¼ teaspoon cumin
1 chicken thigh boned and diced

1 egg, beaten

2 scallions, chopped (garnish)

Place all the ingredients in a 3-quart soup pot. Bring to a boil, lower the heat to very slow simmer and cook for at least 3 hours or up to 8 hours. (Or, place in a crock pot and cook on low for about 8 hours.) Add additional water if necessary. It should be heavy with rice but still have enough broth to be considered a hearty soup.  Before service mix in beaten egg let simmer a minute or two more. Season to taste and garnish with scallions. Salt and Pepper to taste.

Variation: Add any of your favorite vegetables for additional flavor such as mushrooms, onion, carrot, celery.  If you don't use chicken, but instead increase the eggs to three it makes for a great breakfast.

I also am a big fan of poached eggs in the morning and egg drop soup anytime day or night.  Surprisingly popcorn is also great comfort food for me during a flare

My standards are White foods.  Mashed potato, rice, pasta, eggs, custard, pudding, fish, mac and cheese.

As for the fish - Catfish will keep after cooking and reheat well for several days so you don't have to keep going to the store. Plus it is a very mild flavor.

I marinate it for about 30 minutes in equal parts butter, olive oil and lemon juice, with some garlic, basil, oregano, salt and pepper (amounts will be dependant upon how much fish you are making but for about a pound and a half of fish use about 1/4 cup of each liquid and 1sp of each seasoning) then just grill or bake on a rack till done.  I also use this marinade on chicken, pork and lamb.  But for a flare, its fish all the way

I've posted this before, but I have found this cookbook invaluble.  Cooking well for the Unwell, by Eileen Behan.  It has multiple sections with recipes for just about every diet situation we might ever encounter.  When I have been in flares and just plain tired of eating the same food over and over, I have gotten ideas of ways to change things up.  I actually went and got a second copy of this book because I was always loaning it out and didn't have it when I wanted it.  You can get used copies on amazon really cheaply.  It just has so many ideas about ways to incorporate extra nutrition into low residue and clear liquids as well as smoothie recipes.  I just really think its great.

Wow, i can't believe all the foods you can eat in a flare. I can't eat anything but clear broth and weak tea, and sometimes that is too much.  I am sooo jelous!

I'm with you oldcronny - if I'm flaring really bad... it's broth and jello all the way! As a flare starts to ease up though, I like to add home-made croutons to my broth, then eventually work up to some mashed potatoes, and then I know I'm on the mend if I can eat rice made with cream of mushroom soup...

And when I'm flaring but eating anyway - I'm partial to homemade meatloaf. Just your basic hamburger, VERY tiny onions, bread crumbs and ketchup type of recipe. It helps "spice-up" what would otherwise often be just a plate of mashed potatoes!

I TOTALLY forgot my ALL-TIME favorite (which I can't have anymore with this gluten-free thing I'm trying, but that doesn't mean someone else can't enjoy) the always wonderful and magnificent power of home made Chicken and Dumplings. And I mean that quite literally - I always made it with just chicken (boil it yourself for the broth then pick the meat off), and dumplings. No veggies, no seasoning... just salt. Plain, simple, and wonderful.

I am the same as most so far, mashed potatoes, baked chicken, soup/broth etc.  Lately I have been able to tolerate when not feeling all that great is toast with peanut butter and nutella...yumm, it tastes like a reeses peanut butter cup. My favorite all time stand by is just plain pasta (usually vermicelli) and plain tomatoe juice and salt. Its soo good, my kids will even eat it but hubby thinks its disgusting!!!

I was on the Ensure-only diet (6 cans a day last summer) it was really tedious and I whined the whole time.  But now I get cravings for it.  So I buy a six pack every now and then and have it for breakfast.  Funny.

If i'm flaring bad, I eat nothing. I go for the jello, clear tea, boullion. I wean myself back onto food with ice cream, as I am fortunate enough to not be lactose intolerant. Veggies, cinnamon, ginger? I'd be in the hospital!

When I flare, it usually means diarrhea.  So I take the following foods as remedy (a reflection of Traditional Chinese Medicine):

(1) Well cooked white rice gruel with very soft and well cooked pearl barley and Chinses yam;

(2) Bean Curd (boiled with soy sauce)

(3) Steamed buns
