I often get an ulcer or two in my mouth when my Crohn's is flaring, but right now the whole right side of my mouth is full of ulcers. I must have about 5 of them. It's VERY painful to eat or talk. I've had them for a little less than a week and they haven't started to clear up at all. I've been putting Anbesol on them to numb my mouth but as soon as it wears off I'm in so much pain again. Does anyone have any tips on how to get rid of the ulcers or at least the pain? thanks!

I use Aphthasol, it's a prescription paste that stops the pain within the first few days and speeds the healing.

It might sound simple but I've always found that gargling with mouth wash several times a day helps heal the ulcers much faster. And it usually numbs everything for a bit.

Hope you find relief soon. Good luck.

Once you get rid of them (or even before) taking a good probiotic daily can keep them at bay, it has for me, not to mention benfits of probiotics for IBDers, though they should be taken daily and indefinitely.

I have had problems with mouth ulcers often… I once had about 18 in my mouth at once, and they were those big, open white ones that are really painful. I also couldn’t eat or talk. It was terribly uncomfortable and I really lost patience – it made my cry!!

Use strongly salted water as a mouth rinse as often as possible, or salt directly onto the ulcers, I have found, is the best way to get rid of them. The numbing stuff from the chemist helps, especially if it has local anesthetic in it too, and can be good as you can take it with you in your hand bag etc. Listerine and the really strong antibacterial mouth washes will also help. A combination of these three should help you get rid of them. They are awful things when they hit bad, so you have my sympathies! Just try and rinse/apply as often as possible until they go away!

I mix white minty ant-acid like Maalox with liquid benadryl, gargle and spit. Numbs it up for awhile. Dentist recommended.
26 Year old married female law student (last year!!). Diagnosed w/ CD 4 years ago, IBS for over 10 years before that, which was probably the CD. I am sort of lactose intollerant too but can handle anything cultured and do well w/ lactose pills and lactaid. For crohns I am currently on Pentasa 4 pills/4x day and hysociamine prn. I also have bad acid reflux and have been on PPI's since age 13. I have been through prilosec, prevacid, and nexium. Currently I am on Protonix in the morning and Zantac at night. I also take a birth control pill to allow some fun in my life.

Taking 1000mgs of lysine a day always controlled mine. Now that I am on MTX I take 3 mgs a day of folic acid specifically to prevent mouth ulcers.

Adcortyl in Orabase usually works for me. Had a massive really painful ulcer the other night, put some on at night and 2 days later it's gone.

I've always gargled with Hydrogen Peroxide. Even had some burned off if they got too bad.

Oooo! you poor thing. I remember having a mouth full right before I was diagnosed. I was in tears.  I ended up calling my dentist. He was much quicker than the family Dr. I can't remember what it was and fortunately i have never had them that bad since.  hope I don't speak too soon.  Good luck.
