I was recently diagnosed with ulcerative proctitis after 2 months of passing blood, mucus with severe lower abdominal cramps and diarrhea. I had a colonoscopy which the Dr. said confirmed the diagnosis it also showed diverticular disease. I've had diverticulitis and an RNY gastric bypass. I was put on Canasa Suppositories 1,000 @ bedtime and in 2 weeks the blood and mucus stopped. The Dr. told me to finish the Canasa and he added Asacol 400 mg 3 times a day. I took it for 2 days. I woke up on the third day and I could not breath, had a rash was coughing up mucus. I stopped the Asacol and have not taken it since. I believe I'm allergic. The diarrhea continues as many as 6 or more a day. I taking Lomotil after I go 4 times. My Dr. just keeps telling me it can take up to 4 wks for the Asacol to take effect. I'm afraid to take it again. I just joined this forum today. PLEASE HELP! I need advice from all of you veterans.

I am extremely reactive to all 5ASA meds, with UC. But officially they refuse to consider me allergic. If I take any of them, though, I get severe worsening of UC symptoms including severe cramps, liquid D, increased bleeding, and extreme pain. No rashes or anything. I have always been puzzled that the literature on these meds (sulfasalazyne, Asacol, Dipentum etc) all indicates an extremely low percentage, a few percent or less, who experience D or worsening symptoms from them, because it seems to me that the percentage I see on Forums, who feel it makes them worse (but often keep putting up with it on their doc's insistence) is much higher than 10%. However, most definitely do not react badly. It's the backbone of maintenance therapies, as very little is out there other than heavy hitters and natural meds for maintenance, so hopefully you'll be luckier than me.
Often someone can't tolerate one 5ASA drug at all and another works fine. I gave up on ever touching another after I was 0 for 3.

My allergic reaction to one dose of 4 asacol was within a couple of hours after taking it, I broke out into a full body rash, with the chills and sweats, very nauseated and weak, honestly I felt like I was poisoned or something.

Do not keep taking it if you suspect you're having a negative reaction to it, call your doc immediately and let him know.

My bum is broken....there's a big crack down the middle of it! LOL :)

I had a huge allergic reaction to Asacol. I got the hives, huge welps that burned itched and hurt, my lips and eyes swelled up. This lasted for a week, I had to go to the ER twice to get a shot to help with the swelling and burning. I lost the whole week from being knocked out on benydryl between ER visits. On Colazal it made my CD worse, and I had a really hard time convincing my Dr's that it was the Colazal I finally had to quit taking it while I was in the hospital to show them. I refused it. The first day off of it my symptoms started improving. I won't take any more of them.
