So Ive been around on this site for about 3-4 months now, since my last huge flare up...And Im sitting here tonight bored, and it got me wondering about things, like how old everyone is here, when were you dx'ed, what do you do for a living (stressful job?, do you think it effects your crohns?), and if you think your Crohns as gotten better or worse with age...

I'll start I guess lol

-I'm 21 yrs old, I was dx'ed when I was 16

-I work in a candy store, making truffles, fudge, caramels ect...

-My job itself is not stressful I actually love it and have a blast at work (and I can eat chocolate all day, what more could a girl ask for haha), but around the Holidays when we get very busy I def notice that my stomach starts to act up.

-Im fairly new to this disease I guess, and Ive only had 2 serious flare ups, the first is when I was actually diagnosed with Crohns, the second was about 4 months ago which lead to my 2nd surgery, but Id have to say the first flare up was by far worse then the second...so for me in the 5 years that Ive had this disease it hasnt gotten any worse then when I first found out I had it.

I'm 20, diagnosed at 19. I attend school full time so I don't work at the moment, but I am trying to find some sort of odd job that can somehow fit in with my school schedule--very scattered...

School itself has been stressful but doesn't seem to have made things worse. In fact, I'm feeling better than I did all summer, and I can eat a lot more than before.

I suppose I can't really answer the age question :)

I am 26 years old

I was diagnosed 2.5 years ago though I had been having signs of Crohn's Disease for years before hand

I am a commercial interior designer and while at times my work is stressful, my bosses are really great and understanding.

For the last two+ years my doctors have been trying to get me in to remission with medicine and so far nothing has really stuck so I would say that I do not have nearly as many flares as I was having, but I have not seen a huge improvement.

I am 25 years old, diagnosed last November.

I've always had a sensitive stomach and been rather gassy! ever since I was a baby (says my mom). I started having severe pain and problems summer 2003 but doctors said - everything was fine. But got incredibly bad winter 2006 but didn't find a doctor who would listen until winter 2007. I was put on 6mp but developed hives and stopped taking any medicine. In denial I thought I could take care of it myself, but it seems stress gets me down. This July I flared again and finally accepted my doctors care and medication. I've been improving since then and slowly actually gaining weight! - coming to terms with my denial as well.

I work full time at a help desk for a printing company and go to school part time for my masters. Desperately need a new job. My boss pretends to understand, but when I feel my worst and want to go home, he refuses.

I'm glad to have this site and the people to get me through each day <3

I am 46, I was diagnosed with initially with Proctitis, a "Milder" form of Uc, which then became full-blown UC. about 1.5 years later, in 1993 the dx became CD. But I had symptoms off and on since I was 17.

Sincerely,
Matthew

27, diagnosed 22/23, was sick since age 13. Criminal justice undergrad, worked in probation and corrections, now a full time law student looking for permanent work. Work part time at a firm and at a legal aid clinic for school credit. When I let myself get stressed my gut does act up. I am working on changing how my body reacts to stress.

Hi,

I'm 33, and was diagnosed with Crohn's when I was 21. I had been sick for at least a couple of years prior. Since then, I've been in and out of college, depending on the Crohn's (and anxiety disorder). Then I got Valley Fever when I was on prednisone (it lowered my immune system to let it get a hold of me), and a year later I had to have my gallbladder removed, and haven't ever made it back to school. So right now, I live with my parents...in a retirement community. Fun times! I dog sit for old people when my health is decent, and my thumbs are in excellent condition from extensive video game training (my XBL Gamertag is spookyhurst if you're interested in playing some games).

My dad is 62, and has had Crohn's since he was around 21 or so. He's no worse today than he was when I was a kid. In fact, I think he had a lot more problems with it when he was younger. While I end up in the hospital at least once a year, he hasn't been hospitalized since I was maybe 10 years old. So that's hopeful!

 Hello Melissa,

I'm 50, Mom to 4 grown children, and many Grandchildren. I had symptoms from about 7years old and had 6 miscarrages that I now blame on the Crohn's. I was hospitalized in 1990 with Hydronephrosis, and told I had an unspecfied autoimmune disorder, after 9 days and 19 bags of  various antibiotics. I displayed many different symptoms over the next 12years including hives, swelling of joints, a few GI symptoms(not many)but mostly depression (never experenced before 1995), memory loss, serious, fatigue, arthritic and muscle pain. I could not comprend what I read, after teaching myself to read at about 3 years old. In 1995 I resigned a  high stress job that I dearly loved, because I felt to weak and venerable to perform my duties. In 2002 within 6 months after Sharon Osborne went public with her Colon Cancer on the reality show, one hospital where I live had 15,000 women between the age of 35-50 years old request Colon scopes, they were all self pay as insurance only covered the scopes for people over 50 at that time, and of those about a third were DX'd with Crohn's, Celiac, or UC. I just happened to chose a OB/GYN who was on staff there to do my female maintainance. She DX'd me on the spot, and sent me for a scope to confirm. It was the best thing to happen for me in a long time. I now work in the natural products industry, a good idea for me so I can afford the SCD diet I use for control.Sometimes it is stressful. I talk to  people every day who have major illnesses, some the Doctors have given up on, but it must be my calling, when I get home I come here and do more of the same. I remember what it is like to have the Doctors shrug and say "we just don't know", and how wonderful it was to find a forum like this one where people knew what it was like to suffer before things presented well enough for the Doctors to piece it together and help me.

I'm not actually a Crohnie, but I read this forum, as well as the UC forum.  I've had UC for a couple of years. If this bounces me out of the discussion, I understand. I think I first noticed symptoms when I graduated from college the first time in 1999. My chosen profession ended up being more stressful than I ever would have thought, and I began to show symptoms after a couple of years. Nothing that really alarmed me. Then I returned to school to learn a trade that would help me to pay of my student loans. Six years after my first graduation, I got a c diff infection during the last quarter of my trade school, almost didn't graduate. They did a c-scope, and found the UC. I've been trying to incorporate this illness into my life since. Mesalamine keeps me in remission, but it causes allergic reactions that almost makes it untolerable. Prednisone really helps, but I hate the stuff.

I'm 41 and got sick and fairly easily DX at 24yrs of age, I've been flaring to some degree (mostly severe to moderate) for my entire 17 yrs of having this DD because of complications with my perianal crohn's skin tags...my disease actually started with perianal crohn's skin tags which I noticed in my late teen yrs around 17-18 yrs of age but with absolutely no other symptoms, just these stupid bumps (which I was told were hemheroides) which would come and then quickly go, there was also the one time when I was 19 that my lower lip swelled up like a balloon, I thought it was just a blister cuz I'd gotten them from time to time like most people but instead of just a blister which is what it looked like it was starting out as, my entire bottom lip swelled up, other than those episodes in my teens I had no bm, frequency or any other issues that were CD related.

Since I didn't get sick until my first baby was about a yr and a half old I was already a stay at home mom, getting sick just ensured that's what I'd remain, I have 2 gorgeous kids, one boy (16 yrs old come march) and one girl (19 yrs old come January) and they are fantastic and I love them to death, I've got a pretty good hubby too, we've actually been together since I was 15, married for 19 yrs this yr, pretty much together for 26 yrs (minus one yr, which I call my relaxing break LOL).

I find my disease to be too random to say it gets better with age, besides which, researchers have already discovered a cluster of 9 different genes that contribute to the severity and behavior of the disease for each person, so there's no guarantees one way or the other if it gets better or worse as you age because it's different for each persons genetic make up.

My mom also has an IBD, she has UC which she got sick with a few yrs after I got sick with CD, which is weird...when I got DX it was like she was banging her head trying to figure out how I could get such a thing, then whamo, she gets UC a few yrs later in her mid 60's...IBD is definitely a strange disease.

Stress has it's place with IBD as well, yrs ago (around 16ish yrs) I had a colon and rectom surgeon tell me to try and keep my life as stress free as possible. Some people's IBD may be more affected by stress than others with IBD but in general it's always good to try and not sweat the small stuff, the less things you let get to you the better for your health overall.

I'm 30 years old, will be 31 next month. I started having symptoms of Crohn's at 19 or so. Wasn't diagnosed until 2006 however, when I was 29! I'm a SAHM, and I also homeschool our son who is 10. That keeps me busy! :) When I was diagnosed I was working in a super busy doctors office as a PBX Operator. It was quite stressful, and I flared big time while there. Since being home again I feel I'm able to keep my stress down better, and take better care of my health.

I feel my Crohn's has gotten worse with age unfortunately. My flares seem to be worse, and come with new complications that I've never had before. I'm hoping that calms down, but it's one of those things we never know!

I'm 34 years old, suffered with symptoms since 1999, was officially diagnosed 2006 when a partial obstruction landed me in the hospital.  I am working full time for an insurance company in Greece, and I am a mother of two girls aged 8 and 12.  I guess my job keeps me balanced, I don't think I could sit home all day, that would make me really depressed....  although I believe I have a mild case of Crohns, 1-2 bm's in the good days, 5-6 bm's in the really bad days

I am 51 and have lived with this DD for 33 years (this month). I was diagnosed in 3 weeks when I was 18 years old. I work in the Financial industry and really don't have too many stress problems from my job. I am a mother of 3 grown daughters and 5 grandbabies. The grown daughters give me more stress than anything. And I am extremely, happily married.

I'm 32 was dxed when I was 24 in the ER and had a resection 1 week later. It came back and I was working as a Graphics Design Supervisor at a Newspaper and it was very stressful. I realized that after a year I had only actually was in the office for like 2 months because I was in and out of the hospital. So, I needed to find something less stressful and less dependent on me to be there. I moved to a small town and got married, got a stress free job at a Printing company. Went into remission thanks to Remicade. (had to stop it tho because of reactions) Was in remission for 4 years when I had 2 beautiful boys.

I got a new job as a Graphic Artist for a housewares company earlier this year and now my CD is back again. Been flaring every 2 weeks and have a CT scheduled at the end of the month and I will be starting Tysabri before long. Stress plays a huge part in my CD and having 2 small kids and a new job tends to mess with things a bit.
Well..that's my story in a nutshell.

Lets see, I'm about as old as dirt. I live in the swamp lands at the bottom of the earth. The place where you see all the hurricanes hit. I started with symptoms when I was a teen. Doctors called it, nervous stomach. Thats code for , we dont have a @#%$ clue. I more or less learned to live with the pain. When I turned 18 Uncle Sam made me an offer I could not refuse and I got an all expenses paid vacation to a place call Viet Nam. I spent almost 5 years there. Very stressful place too, but pain was a daily thing there and if I crapped my pants no one cared. I came home with another gift. Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) . Old Uncle Sam didn't treat that at the time so I got to deal with that on my own too. I worked 31 years for the phone company. Another stressful place. A year before I had enough time to retire I became very ill. about 100 tests and months later I was DX with crohns. My wonderful company gave me a choice of retiring or being fired. Hmmmm, a no brainer. Yes I would say that stress plays a big roll in CD management. Ive been retired long enough to see that I am doing much better with less stress, although old Uncle Sam still is trying to do me in with stupidity..So far meds and mind over matter have prevailed in CD control but I cant speak for sanity.

I'm 44 (soon 45), had symptoms since '93 but dx with crohns colitis in '02. I chose to ignore the symptoms as flares would come and go through those years. Finally in '02 it got bad enough to see a specialist. Had a colonoscopy which dx the crohns colitis, a few days after the scope things got real bad, they tried everything to control the bleeding but ended up in emergency surgery xmas eve '02 where they removed my large intestine. Now have an ileostomy and scheduled to get rectum removed this fall/winter. I've felt great since surgery with no flares or problems since.
I think stress does definately play a big roll in flares. In '93 when I got my first nasty flare I was under a lot of stress due to the husband's drinking and his party friends invading and trying to destroy our life. It wasn't a pleasant time and I do blame all of that to how I ended up.

Hi!
I am 34 and was diagnosed with crohns when I was 28 about 5 weeks after the birth of my first son.

I have gone from full time to part time to now relief status, working as an Exercise Physiologist/Personal Trainer for a small hospital. I currently work 5 hours a week and am home with 4 small children the rest of the week.

I have had horrible flare ups after the birth of all my children and again when I start to ween them from breastfeeding. I am being foolish and praying that now that I am done having children that maybe I won't flare as much or as bad. Wishful thinking, I know.

So far my crohns has only been in the large intestine up to where the large meets the small! I do get joint pain, mouth sores, and weird skin inflammation as well.

I would say that I handle this disease very well and have wonderful support from family and friends. I have also had awesome support at work where employees have actually donated their paid time off when I was too sick to come to work. I always tell myself I will not die from this. But some days it really does bring me down. I used to love long distance running and have had to give that up. But I still run up to 3 miles when my stomach can handle it. I must say that I thank God that I was diagnosed later rather than when I was in high school or college. I really admire those of you that take on school and this disease! I feel you should be really proud of yourself.

Well I think there is a bee flying around in my computer room so I am outta here!
