My back has been killing me the last couple of weeks.  How many of you deal with back pain and what do you do about it?  I've got hydrocodone and lidoderm patches but it is getting tiring having to deal with it.

I had pretty bad back pain a couple of months ago.  I do not know if it was related to my Crohn's.  I still have some minor back pain.  My doctor gave me a back exercise diagram and asked me to exercise more.  After some exercises, I feel better.

I have and get terrible back pain as well, I was actually hospitalized last year when it went out. My Dr feels that the inflammation in my back is probably caused by the inflammation in my intestines ( a secondary effect?) and when my tummy is under control my back should follow. Not sure how I feel about that, cuz I haven't been well for a year and a half with my intestines or my back.....so I am not sure why we haven't changed my meds to get my IBD under control, which in turn would help my back!?!

I do believe they are related tho, and I am now having some neuropathy problems that my Dr thinks is also connected. More inflammation.....go figure.

I put my heating pad on my back, take valium or other painreliever depending on severity, and the hardest one is resting flat out and NOT doing anything for a day or so. I remind myself of my last hospital stay when I feel I should be doing something instead of resting my back.

Good luck.

Laying flat helps my back pain some.  I also use a heating pad.  I can't take any pain meds because I can't have my intestines slowing down, so I suffer with it and rest as much as possible.

i have bad back pain too..i thought it was maybe me coming off the prednisone, me being in bed for a month in the hospital, or a remicade reaction.., I didn't know others had the same problem! i totally think it's related to the crohn's...just so much inflammation in the intestines can be felt right through your whole core...it got so bad the other day that i went to the doctors to check for kidney stones..they did a scan for not only stones but for cysts on my ovaries and other various things...they only found that the side i have the most pain on shows that my intestines are the most inflammed on that side...ive used heating pads, vicodine, and have my mom massage my back!...its gotten better..haven't had the sharp pain like last week...i think the massaging and strectching it helps!

Armbuster STOP taking the Advil. Ibruprofen is a NSAID and Crohnies are not allowed to use it because it can trigger a flare and/or cause bleeding.

Thanks for all the feedback. My back pain is right at the small of my back. I already found out that I have arthritis there. It was really bad after I had been in the hospital for almost 2 weeks a couple of years ago.

One thing that is funny though. I've noticed that it hurts more when my bowels are normal. When I have "d" the pain isn't nearly so bad. It seems to get worse the longer my stools are firmer. Almost like my innards are pressing on it. Isn't the strange? Just seems to be a correlation there.

I tend to mostly have normal stools except for 1-2 days of the week.

about a year and a half a go, I started getting bad back pain when my crohn's acted up. The only two things that relieved it were laying completely flat (no pillow even) and pain meds. It lasted 3 or 4 months (most of which I spent flat on my back), which pretty much sucked. Then my doctor switched me from Prednisone to Entocort and it got better immediately.

If you have relief from steroids, you are probably suffering from an auto-immune arthritis derived from Crohn's. Most arthritis is auto-immune, but there are known antibodies for gut bacteria that also target collagens of different types in the body. Steroids are general immune system suppressors and that is why it helps some arthritis - it suppresses the antibodies that target the joint collagen. Usually the side effects of the steroids will eventually make continued use impossible, but some people manage without serious side effects.

Found out the spots on the belly and back pain is from shingels triggered by the flu shot i just recived four weeks ago and my system not being what it should. Just what to let you all know the information i read makes my feel i am not alone in this hell. I will never let it beat me !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have had mid back pain for years, had no idea I had crohns.  Once I started meds it subsided for over a year.  I was able to get off of almost all meds.....except Pentasa. Now when I sleep at my boyfriend's house I occasionally get it (different bed than my own) and I just had a colonoscopy that showed strictures.  So I'm not sure what I'm going to do now........I assume I will have to start meds again and hopefully keep the inflammation and stuff under control. I get most back pain after lying in bed too long.  I could never sleep 9-10 hours per night, my back would hurt too much. It is so annoying, I will be moving into boyfirend's house and getting married, he has a King bed we wanted to use and I have a queen.......they are the same brand too, so I don't know what to do. I was going to buy a new one, but now I have no idea what to even buy. This whole crohns can be a real pain in the butt, pardon the pun!

Well, I have a herniated disc (I'm such an old twenty year old, ha) so I definitely know back pain. I find that the yoga position "Child's Pose" helps me (http://yoga.about.com/od/yogaposes/a/childspose.htm) get some relief. Walking also helps A LOT. I have very few issues when I'm at school (with no car) but it gets awful when I'm home and driving everywhere.

Hope you feel better soon!

Yeah, that is where my Osteoarthritis is really gone to town, around my Lumbar verterbrae.
I take Celebrex, Lyrica, & Tramadol for the pain. I've also usen a T.E.N.S unit, which helps & been given some excercises plus my own fitness programs ( OK, I've been remiss on that one, always forget my stretches..). I also have a brace, but I find it is too uncomfortable to wear..

Well, I think I found out the right combo of treatments for my back. One hydrocodone, 2-3 tylenols and a lidoderm patch. Seems to be the only thing that makes my back bearable. Heating pad at night and don't stand in one place. Yesterday I went to my grandson's flag football game and was standing on the sidelines. My back would kill me so I was pacing back and forth and handled it that way.

Trent is 5 years old and one of the cutest kids in the world, along with his sister Skyler and baby brother Austin. I'm a lucky grandma. tongue
