Hi , Does anybody know if taking Prednisolone relieves any pain-bloating resulting from having a stricture caused by scar tissue or inflammation.

I started taking pred for a stricture caused by scar tissue, it did help me for a while but when I tried to taper it got bad again, ultimately I ended up having to have surgery to remove the scar tissue.

Surgeries:2 Bowel Resections, Gallbladder Removed.
Current Meds: Humira (bi-weekly), 10mg Pred (tapering), Nexium, B12 injections.

If your disease isn't active and the pain-bloating is from narrowing caused by scarring then prednisone will not help. Usually though, there is a combination of narrowing caused by scarring (old inflammation) and narrowing caused by fresh inflammation. In these instances, prednisone can reduce the swelling and edema from inflamed tissues and that is often enough to relieve many symptoms. The problem is that it does not heal the inflammation, so as you taper off it, the swelling often returns.

Thank you both for your replies.

Only just 2 weeks ago i've slowly come off prednisolone after being on them for around 4 months, At 30mg and above my symptoms of bloating seem somewhat easier to deal with but soon returned after coming down on the pred. I've now been on Imuran since march and I feel that its not helped that much. Saw my GI last week and once again he has told me to go back on Pred for 2 weeks and then I'll be switching to Endocort for 3 months. I'v never been on endocort before so I'm hoping its going to help...

What is strange is that sometimes during the day I feel better than at other times. I feel better in the morning and normally worse about 3 hours after I eat something which the uncomfortableness lasts about 4 hours. I wouldv'e thought if its imflammation linked I would feel crap at all times, Would I be right thinking this? I even had about 4 days 2 weeks ago feeling somewhat normal but after that the pain all returned..

I so hope I dont have to live like this forever now, I used to be so active with my Crohns.

Thanks again, Your most helpful

Hi Spiceman,

I have the same problem. My GI put me on Imuran & Entocort but unfortunately neither helped. I suffer with bloating to the point of looking 7 months pregnant even if i eat a slice of toast. I'm ok in the morning but as soon as i eat (no matter what i eat) my stomach bloats, the gas starts and i feel like a Hippo for the rest of the day. I have been informed that my crohns is definitely not active and that i don't have a stricture from scar tissue (i was sure it was the stricture) They are going to do a capsule endoscopy to make 100% sure that there is no inflammation or narrowing but basically the last time we spoke they said it must be IBS symptoms causing this bloating and constant discomfort.

Yet i have tried all the IBS meds and not 1 of them has helped. Not even a tiny bit. I am at a loss to know what's causing this, and it's getting worse & worse with time. Sometimes i think i'll just explode after i eat a dinner or lunch.
I wish someone could enlighten me as to the cause so i can start working on how to deal with it.

I don't think Entocort did anything for me except gave me a bigger appetite. But i would love to hear that it has helped you spiceman. I feel your pain and i wish you the best of luck. Keep us informed of your progress.
