Hi Everyone -

I have been on 100 mg of Imuran for about 6 months now and have had pretty good results. Since I have been on it, I have been extremely cautious about taking steps to avoid getting sick (washing hands, avoiding people who are sick etc..)

Here is my current situation - I have been asked to travel for work next week which would involve taking a flight to another state. I am extremely fearful to fly while on this medication since my immune system is compromised. Of course, adding to my hesitation is that the travel is a week before Christmas and the last thing I want to be is sick over the holiday!

Do any of you have experience with flying/traveling while on Imuran? Did you get sick? Am I being too cautious?

Any comments would be extremely helpful. Thanks for reading :-)

I never restricted travel when I was on 6mp (related drug). Travel didn't seem to be where I picked up the bugs. I was more likely to get sick around the holidays just b/c of all the time spent with the kids in the extended family. I'm actually off 6mp and seem to catch EVERYTHING now. Doesn't make sense, but my husband noticed the pattern too.
Hoping to stay in remission after the birth of a healthy baby girl. On Pentasa during my pregnancy, went med-free 2 months to nurse (stupid), but back on Pentasa and still nursing.

I flew while I took imuran. I was also on remicade and 200 mg of imuran. While on both of these, I was never more sick than the rest of my family, and actually, most of the time I didn't catch whatever they had. I have 2 school age children and I'm a teacher, so you can only imagine the germs I'm around. I am an avid hand washer, and I also never use anybody else's pens or pencils.

Im not on any of those drugs but often get sick when I fly. When I had a 20 hour flight to Singapore I used the Zycam nasal swabs and put just a dot of anti bacterial gel in my nose. I didn't get sick!
27 Year old married female law student (last year!!). Diagnosed w/ CD 4 years ago, IBS for over 10 years before that, which was probably the CD. I am sort of lactose intollerant too but can handle anything cultured and do well w/ lactose pills and lactaid. For crohns I am currently on Pentasa 4 pills/4x day and hysociamine prn. I also have bad acid reflux and have been on PPI's since age 13. I have been through prilosec, prevacid, and nexium. Currently I am on Protonix in the morning and Zantac at night. I also take a birth control pill to allow some fun in my life.

I have flown several times while on Imuran. I have never gotten ill from exposure to something on the plane. At this time of year, influenza is a risk and I would make sure I had a flu shot 2 weeks prior to flying. If you are really, really nervous about this, you could always wear a mask.

Hi - I am on 125 mg Immuran, plus a bunch of other stuff and travel a lot. From here in Australia I have been to New York for two days, London for 4 days and Chicago fo 5 days in the past 10 weeks, the london trip alone is 23 hours. I have never been more resistant to disease from what I can see. Planes are fine as the air circulation is better than your local cafe. Mind you I am an expert in using the available facilities wherever I can and get to use the good airport lounges so mauybe that helps.

Haven't taken a flight since on Imuran & Humira, however, I work in a pharmacy and I am around the sick everyday. I don't get sick "more" often than anyone else, however, my colds and such turn into a drama event. I have taken a pneumonia shot (good for 7 yrs.-I think) and an annual flu shot.

Fitzy, I thought I was the only one that crams antibacterial up my nose! Ha! Ha!
