crohns daddy I was thinking the same thing. I understand what you;re saying of course we need to be careful but if you are having a low quality of life and something can fix it then embrace that do what you gotta do to play the hand you were dealt and enjoy life. Heck prednisone (in my opinion) is does a whole lot worse to your body than a pain med. Just my opinion no offense to anyone who feels otherwise.

no one is upset Love. You actually brought up a drug that I (for one) didnt know about and I'm always grateful to get new information on this board.

I was primarily wondering if you'd tried Lomotil previously and that didnt work? Is the Opium the next step, or a lateral step (i.e. Remicade to Humira)?

Also sorta OT: I was on a day cruise with this woman who had been in some horrible accident and would need a cane for the rest of her life. She was sipping from a prescription bottle of Opium at a rate of once an hour or so.

My family doc just prescribed this for me after the Mayo gastroenterologist suggested I give it a try. I took my first dose about an hour ago and am excited to see if I'll sleep through the night! It IS making me a little loopy so I think this will only be a bedtime solution for me...but to those of us who are refractory to Imodium, Lomotil, etc. this stuff is supposed to work wonders!

Great to hear from someone else FINALLY, my goodness! What dose are you taking (or are we not allowed to talk about that on here?). Honestly, it only made me loopy the very 1st time I took it. Then after that nothing. Always make sure you go in between doses. I take 2-3 times a day now. I was desperate and needed some relief. Let me know how it goes. I would love to be updated as I just started as well. NOTHING else has given me ANY relief whatsoever!

What MAYO did you go to? Were they able to help you? I went last Jan (almost 1 year ago) and they were great BUT did not help me @ all. But that is okay, I do not regret going besides the fact that I am still paying off $10,000 due to it!

I'm a weird case, I don't have Crohn's or UC but some other kind of bizarre inflammatory small bowel disease that they haven't figured out yet (probably has something to do with the massive parasitic infections I got in Africa a few years ago). But I was going up to 20 times a day, I mean really awful stuff that would occasionally land me in the hospital. I'm a medical student and had to actually decrease my course load because of this thing. I have literally tried every single drug out there and went to TWO Mayos (now I live in Arizona so I went to the Scottsdale branch this time) and both recommended the tincture of opium but I never got it until now. I'm taking 5 milliliters 1-4 times daily but I'm going to try to use it as little as possible since it is an opioid. I'm crossing my fingers.

Okay I got ya! I take 2-3 times a day and no problems with it! But like I said, I always go in between! I am 25 a day person as well, so good for you. I hope it helps and good luck to you. Going 20-25 times a day IN MY OPINION can be just as bad as taking an opioid, so I think all is fine. We always have to be careful with everything! Keep me up to date with it and how you are doing, could you? If you would like! LOVEPINK

LOL Navy that sounds scary, the 18-foot scope, and YES, I think they did that...the single-balloon enteroscopy that goes into the proximal jejunum. Nuts!

Well, good news and bad news on the opium front...I have not had diarrhea for the past 12 hours (!!!) but I have spontaneously VOMITED twice. I don't know what that's about. I took the equivalent of one teaspoon (5 mL) and pushed it through my feeding tube, which goes into my duodenum...I remember when I first took Percocet after dental surgery I vomited and then was able to tolerate it after that, so maybe the same will happen with this stuff? Next time I try (after my next BM) I might halve the dose to see what happens...vomiting 5 minutes before my microbiology exam was not so pleasant!
