I have been on birth control for a long time.  I went on it when I was 14 for ovarian cysts.  Off at 15.  Back on at 18 when I felt the cysts were coming back and I was sexually active.  Was on the pill until some time in 2005.  Went onto the patch.  Stayed on the patch until 2007 ish when due to some symptoms that may have been side effects I went onto another pill.  Had weird side effects from that and went on yet another.  I keep getting my period early on this one.  So I have decided that I need to figure out what my body feels like without the hormones and then I can better tell what is a side effect, what is crohns, and what is just me.
I am really nervous though because I am at a time in my life where I really can't get pregnant.  I am finishing school this year and starting a new job in a new state in September.  I am thrilled and have a lot of loans to pay off.  My husband and I aren't quite ready to say never ever to children hence why we haven't taken more drastic measures.
So - my goal is to try to have a relatively health married sexual relationship without getting pregnant.  Time to say hi to our old friend condoms.  I remember in college having some irritation from condoms so I was going to try ones without spermicide but again - don't want to get pregnant.  Plus sorry if this is TMI but we need to use the larger sized condoms and there are limited varities of what they offer in that department.
It would be nice if our reproductive systems just had a little on/off switch.  Friends of mine are desperatly trying to get pregnant while I am desperately trying not to lol.  Between crohns and life we don't get to get busy that often so hopefully that will reduce my chances.
So anyways Ive read online that a lot of people got really depressed when they stopped birth control and that their breasts got saggy.  Anyone stopped long term birth control and had bad side effects? Please warn me now! I am stopping between semesters which is good but I do have to travel.
Thanks everyone!
27 Year old married female law student (last year!!). Diagnosed w/ CD 4 years ago, IBS for over 10 years before that, which was probably the CD. I am sort of lactose intollerant too but can handle anything cultured and do well w/ lactose pills and lactaid. For crohns I am currently on Pentasa 4 pills/4x day and hysociamine prn. I also have bad acid reflux and have been on PPI's since age 13. I have been through prilosec, prevacid, and nexium. Currently I am on Protonix in the morning and Zantac at night. I also take a birth control pill to allow some fun in my life.

I never got depressed after going off the pill...my breast didn't start to sag until a few yrs back (comes with age) and breastfeeding 2 kids was the start of that so it was inevidable that they were going to start sagging for me at a younger age plus I'm sure genetics plays a roll in it too, just like it does with stretch marks from what I've heard.

When I quit B/C for the first bit I think it actually helped calm my CD symptoms down some, they were worse when I was on the pill that's for sure.

As you well know, condoms alone aren't 100%, but condoms with spermicide foam (that the woman injects into herself, if that form still exists) along with a condom is a better combination.

It would probably be better to discuss with your doc all the options that are out there...after having my second child I got clips put on my tubes which is basically permanant, it can be reversed (but that will never happen for me thanks) but they say the longer you have them on the less chance you'll have of getting pregnant when gettng them taken off...so I haven't used any form of BC in ages.

My bum is broken....there's a big crack down the middle of it! LOL :)

If ANYTHING, I think you'll feel BETTER off the pill.

I have PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) and therefore REQUIRE the BCP, so long as it's not drastically affecting my other health issues. (I.e. I developed high blood pressure from steroids - they are giving me one more month on BCPs and blood pressure meds, monitoring the pressures and if all goes well, we'll continue on BCPs - we are just being cautious because of the stroke factor).

Anyway, the pill has a tendency to decrease sex drive, cause a bit of depression, and make you gain weight....

I think you'll be fine. I hope you find a form of birth control that works for you! I'm required to take 2 forms of birth control during my clinical trial.. I laughed at the research and asked "does abstinence count?" But, anyway, good luck! I think you'll be fine. But, I do worry if you have cyst issues... Do you have PCOS? Because the pill is the only thing to keep PCOS under control, it's consider the "treatment" for it.

I stopped the pill about a year ago. I was on it for 15 years, and had no side effects from stopping. I also find that condoms cause me irritation. Would a diaphragm be an option for you? Blessings, Julie

OK first of all Fitzy I have seen your picture, you will always be cute and probably always have been. So please just get over the body issues already. (I know alot easier said then done.) Unless you are a D cup or further on down the alphabet, I wouldn't really worry about the sagging issue (that is much more common with larger sizes and pregancy). Exercise wise pullups and pushups do wonders for this issue as well.

Good luck with the birth control issue. I have tried to go off of depo a couple of times and ended up in some of the worse crohns flares in my life. But yet I still worry about the cancer issues.

I found when I went off BC my cramps and premenstrual stuff just went off the charts, it made things much worse for me. I wish you good luck, but be prepared that the PMS symptoms may get worse.

Thanks everyone. I have only had 2 cysts in my life (that I know of) but that is because I stayed on the pill. If they start to come back I will go back on. If my PMS stays really bad after a couple months I will go back on. This is more of a test to see what my body feels like without hormones so I can properly attribute each symptom to each cause.

Navy thanks for the reality smack - I really don't think I have body issues and get annoyed with women who obsess over their imperfections. I had some body issues awhile back because all at once I was dealing w/ hair loss, weight gain, acne, etc - but after switching birth controls and starting Rogaine that is over with. So - I am currently a C cup but had a nice late puberty burst at 21 so I wasn't sure if some of that would disapeer going off the pill. If it does, that is fine, but I'd rather not have to run out and buy a bunch of new bras lol. I was just curious what to expect.

My biggest concern was the forums I read where women felt crazy and had depression and anxiety after going off the pill. Today is day one (end of my pack) and we will see how things go.

Like Nanners, I had the bad PMS symptoms. That was it.
Hoping to stay in remission after the birth of a healthy baby girl. On Pentasa during my pregnancy, went med-free 2 months to nurse (stupid), but back on Pentasa and still nursing.

Well, I really don't know a whole lot in this department because... well... I'm a virgin, and I've never been put on birth control... (despite the fact that I've had cysts... and also had to have surgery to take out a mass on my right ovary... PLUS the right ovary itself and the phillopian tube)...

But... And this is just a thought... The best way not to get pregnant is to not have intercourse... This doesn't necessarily mean that you have to stop playtime entirely, though.... Why not try experimenting doing different things? Buy some toys... Explore each other a little more... That sort of thing... :)
I think I am being picked on by life, sometimes. But's that okay. Life and I are good buddies... I know life doesn't mean no harm. It just is the way it is. I can accept that.

When using condoms, personally, the latex/spermicide didn't matter what was on it, irritated me like crazy down there. If you do go the condom route, try polyurethane condoms. They are more expensive, but a great deal gentler on our *naughty bits*. Good luck!

Pentasa- 1000mg/2x 1/08; Percocet
Remicade 1st infusion 7/24/08
Ultram ER 200mg; Prilosec 40mg; Xanax-ANXIETY; Cymbalta 60mg

I'm so tired, when will this get better?

I went through this about a year and a half ago--dropped the pill abruptly after I had been on it ~6 yrs.
Interestingly, the only time I had a cyst was once--when I was on the pill. That was about a month before I got off it, and things are OK so far.

I had no issues with mood while getting off the pill. In fact...I definitely think my mood is much improved while OFF the pill. My husband also noticed the difference.

Sadly it did help to control menstrual cramps/flow, and after about six months of being off the pill my periods became much more painful and annoying.

At the time I was concerned about pregnancy so I went to the doc and was given a diaphragm, which I planned to use with condoms (really don't want to have kids right now). After using it once with the spermicide I had the worst UTI of my life. It's probably OK if you are not prone to UTIs, but I never used it again. Since then just condoms, and things have been fine. Regarding irritation: use KY or some other lubricant. It might not be the spermicie...Your discomfort when using condoms may abate with more lubrication.
