Hi I think I am in the right place.  about a week ago I went to the doctor with pain in my flank side.  They did a ct scan and it showed nothing.  I followed up at my doctor and she said I should go for a obstruction series.  Does anyone know what kind of test that is?  Do you have to drink a liquid and then you get a xray.  I still have a discomfort in my stomach.  I think it might be my gallbladder but I am afraid of a blockage because she is ordering this test.  Anyone have input I would apperiate it.

I am thinking she might be ordering a small bowel follow thru. In this test you drink two cups of Barium and then at about 15-30 minute intervals they take xrays until the barium moves thru your small bowel. Very easy test.

SBFT should clearly show any narrowing or obstruction. If that is all ok, a gall bladder ultrasound and ejection fraction test would be wise.

I just had a SBFT this morning. It's a relatively easy test, but it's still not fun. My body rejects the barium and makes me throw it up (this happens every time I have this test). I actually don't think it tastes that horrible, it's just really heavy (they let me dilute it with water though). In the end, I only had to drink one cup (rather than re-drink the first cup that came up) and my x-rays were fine! So, I'm not sure why they make us drink 2. Anyway, I'm the odd one out when it comes to difficulty with this test. As I was sitting there nauseous, 3 other people went before me and were just fine. The nice thing about this test is that as long as you drink a lot afterward, you will feel fine. Good luck! Let me know if you have any other questions.

Sometimes an obstructive series means taking a series of xrays, no barium to drink, unlike a SBFT.
When I've been sent for an obstructive series, which is many times, they took about 4/5 xrays, thats all.
