hi all after doing some research into what i have had done i found a topic on this forum and had a good read and thought i would join, im sorry if this has been asked many times and if its a bore but i need to ask.
im currently 25 and i was diagnosed with crohns disease around 2 years ago, i have never felt very well since. I was introduced to prednisolone steriods and pentasa when first diagnosed which helped and i eventually got off the steriods and kept taking the pentasa, after around 8 months i got really unwell again and had to start taking the prednisolone again, 12 to begin with i am still taking them to this day as i can not get off them, am down to 3 a day. I then noticed a large red infection around my back passage on both cheeks with lumps not close to the hole but sometimes hurt alot, doc said it was infected syst (spelling), the red area has been there well over a year and sometimes the anal area being very sore almost like havin a knife up there and being told to walk with it all day, i would put cream on to sooth it but always had problems with it being very sore, i had it looked at many times by my gp and had creams and anti biotics but it never cleared up, i had a mri scan and it showed a pus ball and i recently had a abcess which ment havin surgery as there was pus coming out a small hole near my anal passage. i had surgery last week and they made a 3 inch cut which they left open to heal which has been very painful but i think it must be near enough healed now, they also have put in a draining seton which i can only feel the knot on the end as it is far to painful to look at at the minute. they gave me painkillers and set me on my way to recover. anyways it is very very painful havin a BM. is this normal? its been a week now and is still just as painful as day 1, With havin crohns my stool is always sludge but is very painful to pass, it feels as if the inside of my back passage has been cut but like i say its to painful to have a good look. is this because there are many nerves in that area which may not have healed like the wound yet and just a matter of time before it heals?, i have read alot online about BM becoming increasingly less painful with a seton but im in agony everytime i go. i jump straight into a bath after having a BM as its to painful to wipe.
there is so much i wanted to say but now my minds gone blank......
oh yeah i get this real bad pain now and again like my bum in knotting up its over in seconds but takes my breath away everytime
thanks in advance for any replys.

Hello Danielw!

Welcome to the forum! I am sorry you are suffering from abscesses!!! I've had a few and they are no fun. No fun at all!!

I strongly suggest you look at the posts over the last few weeks. We had had several threads on this subject with lots of good discussion. You can use the Search bar at the top center of this page. You will find great suggestions for dealing with surgery and setons.

I am curious about your recovery -- I must not be understanding what you wrote. You say you got a 3 inch incision during your surgery a week ago. Is this right? But then you say it is almost healed. If so, that is miraculous healing!!

I am also concerned your doctor let you go a year with abscesses. If caught earlier, you may not have needed so large a surgery and wouldn't have suffered so much for a year. I think it is outrageous that your GP looked at it several times and didn't help you. If this is true, you need to get a new doctor immediately. Abscesses are dangerous and can cause real trouble (septis can be fatal).

As for the pain, I suggest you talk to your surgeon to make sure your are going in the right direction healing-wise. Unfortunately, inflammation and infection that result from abscesses can take a long time to heal, so you must be patient. But you want to make sure nothing else is wrong. When do you have a follow-up appointment with your surgeon?? if it isn;t soon, just call him/her.

Take care!

Hey there Daniel, I also just had a seton put in for a fistula (mine is in a diff area though :P). Mine was put in on Friday and I have been having a LOT of pain since then. It pretty much hurts to exist right now but the worst pain is when I go to the bathroom like you were saying. I don't know if that's normal...I certainly hope not. I would suggest you contact your surgeon. I am going to call mine tomorrow to ask if anything can be done and to see if it is normal. I will post if she tells me anything that might be helpful for you as well. Take your pain meds (if you still have any) and I wish nothing but speedy relief to you :)

hi there, thanks for your replys and welcomes, yes i had at least a 3 inch incision which i somehow managed to get a picture of using my mobile phone camera even with it being very sore but looking today it has appeared to have healed (day 8)....which does supprise me after all my immune system is not what it should be with having crohns. i was lucky enough to have a half decent look this morning and it looks as if i still have a pretty nasty wound around the seton, like i read somewhere else looks almost like a nasty bullet wound, this morning was not as bad to have a BM, it did still hurt usually id give it a 10 for pain but this morning i think was a 8. poor way to explain but its best i can do while feeling like this. as usual i was straight into the bath afterwards to soak. i actually managed to dress myself and move my car from the spot its been sat in over 10 days which was nice.
i had major problems with my doctors that i was with from being a child, i visited at least 10 times  before changing my surgery completely after difficulties getting a appoinment and not being taken seriously, they thought i had heartburn and intergestion problems but after changing surgery they refurred me to hospital straight away. altho they were good when it come to being diagnosed with crohns they were not so quick to sort the red infection on my bum as it was there well over a year, being 25 i was bit  reluctent to go see a doctor and show them my bum without feeling a bit silly but i did and they thought it was peri-anal excema and other things which i forget now but the mri scan showed the pus ball and a week later i had a new hole and pus coming out of it which was a week before the surgey.. i have had my bum out so many times to so many different doctors it doesnt bother me anymore..... seems tradition that when i go docs i have to get it out... lol
i will use the search and have a read up on other peoples storys,
im hoping this morning was the start of easier BM but i usually go twice a day so will see how it goes tonight. looking forward to my bath afterwards  :-)
im still getting the knotting pain now and again thoughout the day which hurts for a second or 2. there awful.
anyways now time for some painkillers....
25 y/o crohns disease suffer...
