can anyone relate any experiences with weight loss during flares.
I mean...I've lost weight before when i have flared, but it seems as if i've dumped 12 lbs.
overnight lately...i have not been feeling great, but have been binging at times due to the prednisone i'm back on (which is not controlling anything right now for some reason.)
I feel like maybe i'm eating a bit less, but not significantly so...
and although i've been spending a lot of time on the can the volume does not seem to have increased...

I dropped 40lbs in less than 3 months last year so I can definintely relate to weight loss during a flare. I went from 168 to 128 in no time. Even after being out of the flare for the past few months, I've still had enough bad days that have lost me another 5-7lbs.

Even if you're eating, the small intestine in Crohn's Disease doesn't always properly absorb the nutrients your body needs to stay well & fit, like fat & calories. That's my understanding, anyway. Recently, on good days, I've eaten nachos and cheeseburgers but haven't put any weight back on. But my illness isn't quite under control right now either so that is probably why.
Diagnosed in October, 2004 at age 32.
Current Rx's: Colazal (generic), Omeprazole, Ferrous Sulfate, Librax, One-A-Day multivitamin, Probiotic, Omega-3 Fish Oil, Vitamin D, Vitamin A, Calcium-Magnesium-Zinc, Cranberry pills
Secondary conditions: mouth ulcers, joint pain, swelling ankles, extreme fatigue
Previous/occasional Rx's: 20mg Prednisone taper, Flagyl, Levaquin
No surgeries to date

I lose weight during flares. Usually 10 lbs, and I don't have much to lose in the first place.

I feel ya buddy! I hate being the "skinny" guy! I always lose weight during a flair. I work so hard to gain weight when Im feeling good and even right now Im starting to look acceptable but as soon as I flare all that fried chicken, hamburgers, malts, pizzas, and so on disappear. It's frustrating for me. I'm 5'8 and the most I ever weighed even when I was well and in terrific physical shape was 180. Now I hover around 140 to 150 but got as low as 112 when I was really sick once. Keep the faith. Tony
Crohns 30 years. Ileostomy for 15 years. Symptom free for 14 years until 6 months ago. Now on Remicade and iron. Feeling like a champ!

Heck ya, same here. The crappy thing is that most people don't know that I have crohn's cause I don't go announcing to everyone so they litteraly tell me everyday how skinny I am. During bad flare ups when I get the runs real bad I take anti diarrea meds and it helps to absorb more liquids and calories from the food. I don't know if ya'll notice but a lot of the wieght can be water wieght that you lose. But the best thing to do is always have like 2 of 3 ensures or liquid supplements with you to drink. That helps a lot and is easier on your stomach than solid foods.
Keep up the appetite!

I lost 20 lbs in a week during my last one. I was only 107 lbs to begin with! It gets annoying hearing people asking me if I've lost weight all the time. I get sick of explaining to them that I'm actually sick and don't have an eating disorder or something.

That is one symptom I don't have that I wish I did... I keep gaining weight because of the prednisone. I am back on it now, so I am pretty sure I will be gaining even more weight now... I am about 20 pounds overweight since getting this disease, while I was always at a healthy weight before.

I lost 40 pounds in 2 months when I was really sick. I'd like to loose more.  Now I'm trying to loose and can't regardless of how hard I try. Well... I guess I could just stop eating.

I lost 2st since last June. I went down to 7st (sorry don't do pounds) but I am now about 7st9ish. I am on 25mg of pred at the moment and seem to have developed a sweet tooth again, don't really like too much sweet stuff usually. Been eating loads and the weight just doesn't seem to be going on that quick really. I'm spending more time than I would like on the toilet as well. Some days I don't really have much of an appetite, but then I make myself something and eat the lot. The pred doesn't seem to really be having too much effect on me at the moment either, but then maybe I'd be worse if I wasn't on it, so who knows. My Remicade still doesn't appear to be kicking in yet after 4 infusions.

Hope you start gaining some weight soon mtgman.
37yr old woman UK. Diagnosed with crohns in 95. Currently on 2400mg asacol, 100mg Azathioprine. Been on Remicade once which worked well for me, but they took me off it. Flared up again. Took Humira but it didn't seem to agree with me, but thinking it was now an infection rather than side effects from Humira. Now back on Remicade, had 3 infusions so far and no reactions as yet. Consultant wants me to have a colostomy bag fitted, I've refused and want to try as many options as possible. On Elemental 028 extra diet for 6 weeks.
