I take magnesium, if that doesn't work then milk of magnesia, if that doesn't work then Colace.

Fiber supplement and/or Ducolax stool softner. I never use laxatives and hope I never have too.

HI PB4

My sister is having terrible issues with constipation -- not my problem, that's for sure -- I am recommending fibre supplements, but she says she's heard detrimental things about metamucil. What do you take? Looking for something that will be least likely to cause cramping and excess fullness. I will gratefully pass on any advice.

Hey belleenstein, far as I know most if not all fibre supplements will increase gas/bloating until your system adjusts to them which is why you have to start with the smallest amount and increase only if necessary and only after your system has adjusted to the initial dose...I use one called Prodiem stool bulking therapy (not to be confused with their lasative pills).

Fibre supplements will aid with either D or C so you might want to look into them yourself too.

That Polycarbophil is a non-fermentable fiber and so is much less gassy and does not feed undesirable bacteria. It is the fiber in PB4's supplement - Prodiem.

I use stool softners every night at bedtime. If I didn't use them and missed one day of no bm's I would be in a world of hurt. They work great for me and are gentle on my system. Good luck!!

I use the Metamucil. It has been a God send. Yes works for D and C with me. I think maybe I should try the polycarbophil if it will help gas more. Thanks Keeper and Crohnie4now.

PB4:

Thanks for the info I will pass it along to my sis. As for me and fibre -- I have to walk a very fine line with the fibre in my diet and when I'm able to tolerate it, I just increase the amount I eat within my regular diet -- oatmeal, wholewheat instead of white etc. But bulk often equals pain for me, and for a lot of us crohnies who have stricturing crohn's, so I would rather have low residue and sometimes go more often, than suffer the pain from a formed stool.

Still what's most important for all of us, (I guess in my sister's case, whether we have crohn's or not) is to remain aware of how our food makes us feel and adjust accordingly.

Yes Bell that's true, stricturing crohnies have to be careful with fibre, at the same time still have to get some fibre in daily. True about the food in general as well.

:)
