Hi everyone,

I'm new to the forum. I was diagnosed with Crohn's about 10 yrs. ago and have had a small bowel resection, due to an abcess that burst. I'm on Pentasa and take a multi-vitamin, so I was wondering what other vitamins and probiotics anyone is using that seem to be effective. I'm lucky because I don't have pain too often, just the big "D" that's more of an annoyance. Other than immodium, has anyone found anything else that works well for that?

I just take a lactobacillus type of probiotic. I unfortunately can't take vitamins as they upset my stomach too much. But the probiotics really helped to firm up my stool and help me to have less visits to the bathroom. Hope that helps.

I tried several different brands of probiotics, they all seemed to make things worse or do nothing at all. My doctor recommended Align and I reluctantly tried it. It helped with the gas and bloating, not sure why this brand helped and the others didn't. My point is that some brands will work for some of us and others will work for others, so don't give up after just one. Just make sure you are trying GOOD brands.

Also, I take Xifaxan. It is an antibiotic that is only absorbed into the intestine and is mainly Rx'ed for travelers D. It is used off label for CD. I have been taking it for about 2 years and it has made a world of difference in the number of runs I make to the bathroom. I used to go about 15 - 20 times a day. My normal day is about 5 - 7 now, with those mostly at spread out over 2 time frames, an hour in the morning and an hour in the evening. Much more manageable.

I also take B6. I find it helps with my energy level. It took about a month for the effects to show up, but I no longer NEED a nap every day, I can take a nap, but I don't NEED it.

Best wishes

Managing with strict low residue diet, keeping symptoms to a minimum. All test show small amount of ulceration, still have occasional blockages. But still have a great time with my 2 daughters and husband!

Prednisone, 6MP,Prevacid, B12 shots, Bentyl, Xifaxan.....
