Hey chroniemom, no I' haven't been on the pill for over 16 yrs cuz after I had my son I had the clips put on my tubes (since I knew we wouldn't be planning to have anymore kids) but the clips don't interfere with periods so I still get them every month. I don't want to use BCP cuz they also exacerbated my CD daily not just during my periods. My CD symptoms didn't start getting worse with my periods until about 6 yrs ago so I don't know if it might be because of my IBS that I also have (6 yrs ago is around the time my GI suspected I had also developed IBS), but either way, be it my CD or my IBS my bowels are just worse behaving during my periods so I want to stop them.

I had the Mirena inserted in September 08 and just had it removed in Feb. I flared really bad shortly after insertion and again after removal. But in between it was awesome! No problems with crohns at all and periods were almost non existent.
I suffer an increase of symptoms of crohns with my period too. I did not have it removed because of anything wrong.

Keep me posted how it works for you.

I am considering it because my copper IUD expires in Jan 2010. I am very close to needing to make a decision. My OBGYN said that mirena would be a good idea since I would get to skip periods. They said that would happen with the injection I got years ago (I forget the name) and I got my period anyway. I did have some problems with the hormones on BC pills making me moody etc (like PMS all the time) so I wonder if Mirena IUD does this as well? or are the hormones in it different? I sure would like to skip my period, all it does is cause trouble for my CD and other things. Also, I am not planning on any more kids. I have been happy with the copper one for the last 10 years but I need to do something for the PMS and CD! Karen

Thanks Sally and karendee for your replies...

karendee from reading the pamphlet my doc gave me the Mirena does have low dose hormones in it and weight gain as well as pms and other symtpoms can also happen with the Minera I'm just hoping for me they won't be an issue and it stops my periods all together in the hopes that I won't have to deal with my CD over-reacting even more when it's period time.

thanks pb4. I had looked into it before and had thought I might go with another copper one since Mirena has hormones. However, the promise of no periods is very tempting since my CD worsens with them. Karen

Ya, mine too which is why I think I'm gonna try the Mirena, I take a good probiotic so there should hopefully not be any issues as a result from the hormones in the Merena, I guess if I don't like it overall and it's not doing what I want it to do then I'll just have it removed and wait impatiently for menopause LOL.

Hi,
I had a mirena fitted in December 08 not for contraceptive reason as I have my tubes clipped but for excessive bleeding. I have been bleeding most of the time since saw gynae a few weeks ago and he wants to give it more time but if bleeding hasnt stopped by the end of may he will remove it and next option will ablation. Apart from weight gain (16lbs) which I could do without I havent found any other complications. Just to let you know I had one fitted a few yrs ago and bled continously aswell.

Yikes Kayspain, sounds like you're quite a bleeder...luckily I'm about a medium flow so I'm keeping fingers crossed that this Mirena will stop mine all together and I won't have any exacerbated symptoms of my CD or IBS each month.

I'm not concerned about it for birth control at all, I had clips put on my tubes about 16 yrs ago to take care of that (after having my second child) and that has worked out excellent for me to not have to use BC which is why I don't want to go on the pill cuz those can exacerbate (and did for me) IBD symptoms and not just at period time but every day (my experiance). I just hope I don't get any side effects with the Mirena and that it will completely stop my periods for me.

Hi pb4!

I had a Mirena IUD inserted in September 2005.  I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world.  My periods are non-existent.  Woo Hooo.  I plan to have another one inserted in September 2010.  I did not have an issue with the weight gain.  My 15 lb weight gain happened when I started Humira in September of 2008.  Not having a period has made my Crohn's much better.  I did spot off and on for a few months after insertion, but after that, nothing.  I'll be 40 in June.  Good Luck.

I had spotting on and off for about 2 months. I started gaining weight around 4 months. about a pound a week until I gained almost 10 pounds and because I am 5 foot 2 and my husband had a vasectomy recently, I said get that sucker out! Sorry to say I was being vain!

So that said, it really did help with the crohns! I was more level as far as mood swings go (almost too level for me) but I felt bloated ALL the time.

Although we are all different, I think for what you are taking it for you will like it. And as some have said, if you don't you can always have it removed.

Awesome mnchkn and Sally, thanks for sharing your experiances...I know when I was a teen and went on BCP I never gained an ounce so I'm hoping I won't from this IUD either, of course I was a teen moons ago now but I'm keeping fingers crossed that I won't get the weight-gain or any other annoying symptom from it.

PB4 - I maybe mistaken but isn't the reason bcp's can make IBD flare is b/c of the hormones? And doesn't the IUD you are looking at have similar hormones? Since you don't need the bc aspect maybe there is a lower dose hormone pill you can take instead of dealing w/ the insertion. If you take bc continuously your period stops too. Also, what about the shot or the patch? My main question is if bc made you flare wouldn't the hormones in an IUD do the same?

Yes, I've thought about that too but was explicit with my doc about how my periods affect my IBD/IBS and he assured me the level was low and constant so my body should adjust, he also ensured there was no guarantee it would stop my periods so if I wasn't happy with it I could have it taken out, he also knows I take probiotics and he figures that should help as well where the Minera is concerned...guess we'll see when I finally build up enough nerve to try it.

ah, sorry PB4, I don't think I was entirely clear with my question. I am afraid of the IUD because I am afraid of the pain of insertion, complication, etc. What I was trying to ask was if your doctor cleared you for the hormones, instead of going with what I consider a scary procedure, could you try the patch or pill instead?

Hey fitzyk, he basically said for what I'm looking for (stopping my periods) my only options were ablation (which I thought was kinda invasive and he quoted 80% success or some women may end up bleeding more), the Minera IUD spcifically (cuz a copper kind woulnd't stop my periods all together) or the Depo shot. I don't want the pill, been there done that cuz the pill really messes with my CD. Thankfully I likely only really have to worry about this for only another 10ish yrs, by then menopause will be sure to be on it's way LOL.

I'm not looking forward to having it "installed" LOL but none of the other options sound that great either, ablation, depo shot...hopefully he'll be quick about getting it in there and I won't feel any cramping or pain once it's in.

I have used the depo shot for years, because I had to stop the bleeding from my periods. I would pass out from the blood loss. I am so much happier on depo. But it took about six months to a year to reach a theraputic level. I do not use mine for bc right now, so I only use it when I need to stop bleeding and that is usually every 4-6 months. I had one incident for two months that I had weird bleeding during the 14 years I have been on it. The weird thing this depo shot is suppost to be bad for your bones, but I am actually gaining ground on my dexa scan. Seems my bone problems were more from damage to that area of the intestine.

Hello I have been using the Mirena IUD Since March 2008 and I love it. My Crohns is in remission the doctors think that the IUD is playing a role in the remission. I dont have any weight gain or side effects! LOVE IT, LOVE IT!!!!!!!
