Hi i'm a new member, but have viewed the forum as a guest previously.
Have been diagnosed with Crohns since 1996, but like many others had the symptoms for years before!
Currently taking Colestyramine sachets - known as Questran in the UK. Was prescribed this after 2nd surgery in 2007, previously had a Hemi-colectomy in 1999.
Wondering if anyone has had any problems taking this medication. I take 1 sachet a day and have been experiencing Colic symptoms, gas, bloating.
Any reply would be helpful.
Diagnosed 1996 / 2 x surgery 1999 & 2007

meds - 6 x 500mg Pentasa / 4g colestyramine - daily

Hi irv,

I've been taking Questran for years and one hint I can share with you is to reduce the amount of Questran until you find the least effective dose. It's not necessary to take the whole sachet, but please verify this with your doctor. Hopefully this will reduce some of the side effects that your having.

There are other forms of bile salt binders, colestid for one,--you might try another brand. These drugs are very effective for me and I hope they will help you also.

There is a pill form of Questran, I believe its called Colestipol (sp)? I'm not 100% sure about the name.  But the powder form works better for me. I use the big can of it, and do a scoop in the morning with oatmeal, and a scoop at night with a little bowl of cereal.  Just wondering if you're taking it with food or not?  I wasn't at first and it did no good for me and made me all gassy. I talked to my GI, and he told me specifically to take it with oatmeal in the morning, and since I started doing that it seems like its doing the trick. Also, I disolve it in warm water, and it makes it a LOT less gritty.

Current Meds: Imuran 50mg, Vitamin B12 (injection), D, and C tablets. Fish Oil Tablets, Cats Claw, Slippery Elm, and Reishi.

FWIW I take Colestid capsules. Works the same for me as Questran did without any of the gag! The caps are 1 gram each, fairly big, but 3 grams a day keeps me well. Good luck!
