Hey all,
Well I have been reading up on a few of the previous threads on strictures and what not. I just can't seem to try and 'self diagnose' myself as having just a crohn's stricture with inflammation and possible scar tissue or having the 'help' of adhesions cause my partial bowel obstructions. Seems I partially obstruct every 6 months or so. The severity ranges from one or two days at home to having to spend 5-6 days in the hospital.  Since my obstructions happen fairly quick, im tempted to suggest that adhesions might be part of the cause. Does anyone have experience with adhesions and determining between the two? Is it time for surgery if I am having partial obstructions every 6 months? I do forget to stay on a low residue diet :(

Don't have any experience with obstructions or blockages but did have a stricture in my colon which I just had removed. I had an endorectal ultrasound before deciding to have the surgery. It can tell how much is scar tissue. Don't know what they do for you when you are hospitalized? I did do low fibre diet for over a year before surgery.

Hope you get some answers.

I'm on the same page as you with all this. It's really hard to isolate the 2. I don't know your history, you'd need to evaluate that for potential for adhesion production.

I can tell you one thing from my own experience though -- if it's intermittent, it's less likely it's adhesion based (unless you eat something that is hugely fiberous only every 6mo)

with my adhesion problems I had no break at all from partial obstructions for 2 years, was on a straight liquid diet for 2 years, they got one adhesion (I've had 4 abodiminal surgeries) which made things much easier, but I'm still on a partially liquid diet...

if a diet helps you and you can tie your obstuctions to what you ate, it'd be way more holistic to just be careful of what you eat...

also, not to be negative, but surgeons in my experience hate to deal with adhesion stuff because it's hard to find and hard to figure out.

all the best!

I had adhesions and stricutres and decided to have surgery when I just couldn't take it anymore. I just wanted to get off the steroids and eliminate unknown hospital stays. I couldn't plan any events in my life without fear of having an obstruction. I was too weak to do the most basic things. It started to control my life. I always felt like this black cloud was overhead at all times. So I had a resection about 3 years ago. I haven't had a total obstruction since although I still deal with D and inflammation. Good luck to you!!

I am on my 7th day in the hospital and have had a small bowel follow which the barium didnt come back out after much getting upset to no end they finally gave me which passed a couple hard bullets and small ones at that. Then decidided to do a colonoscopy and started whith magniusum nitraite , suppositories and go lightly. could not do the scope because of the you guessed it barium. WHY!!!!!! They are trying to get me back up to rocchester to mayo they have not the answers. Low residue diet also but its hard to put stuff in when it dont want to come out you know.
