Can you get some type of meal replacement instead, something like Ensure or Boost? Those at least will give you a little more nutrients and less sugar. You could even try drinking chicken broth too or Pedialyte. Good luck!

That poweaid may end up working against you, sugar can wreak havoc on us because of it contributing to bacterial over-growth, you may want to consider some of the suggestions above and juicing or something so you can get in some nutrients. I'm all for bowel rest, but it has to be done right so you don't end up getting worse.

I'd been drinking a lot of Powerade the past few weeks but quit due to all the sugar. During my first flare I drank a lot of smoothies (like from Jamba Juice or I made my own), heavily watered-down instant oatmeal, soups with no solid ingredients, etc.

You sound like I use to be. I had what I called a JAG diet. jell-o, applesauce, and gatorade. The only things I eat when I am really ill, then I add in Bannanas or Rice. When I really feel brave I go to white toast and bacon. For some reason toast and bacon is always the first solid that stays in me, that I have found.

Good luck to you and keep drinking something, even if it is sugar it is better than nothing in my mind.

Those sugary drinks can work against you! Try chicken broth, or beef broth, and Pedialyte. Do you have Immodium, Bentyl, or Lomotil? Try to always keep these things on hand. You can take an Immodium after each stool up to six times daily. Works wonders sometimes just getting the cramping and urgency to STOP! We CD patients get so fragile so fast! Even after one day of bad cramps and lot of "D" you can get run down. My kids who have gone to college now... make me put Pedialyte under my bed:) sweet! Just in Case.
Also, Gatorade contains lots of salt which isn't good for "kidney stones" I've found.
Godd luck!

I just found out about Powerade Zero: zero calories, no sugar (sweetened by sucralose). Gonna give that a try--seem to feel dehydrated most of the time even though I drink plenty of water and am sure I get the RDA of sodium. REI also has rehydration tablets that apparently contain all the electrolytes..

Edit: I picked some up! Was this stuff made for Crohn's sufferers?!? Besides electrolytes it has vitamins B6 and B12. It tastes a little weird at first, but it's not bad at all after that.

I can't handle the fake sugars so beware of the sucralose.
27 Year old married female law student (last year!!). Diagnosed w/ CD 4 years ago, IBS for over 10 years before that, which was probably the CD. I am sort of lactose intollerant too but can handle anything cultured and do well w/ lactose pills and lactaid. For crohns I am currently on Pentasa 4 pills/4x day and hysociamine prn. I also have bad acid reflux and have been on PPI's since age 13. I have been through prilosec, prevacid, and nexium. Currently I am on Protonix in the morning and Zantac at night.  I take xanax prn for situational anxiety (aka no easy bathroom access).

Oh, Isergodur. That's not good. I'm so sorry you're this unwell. Have you phoned your doctor?

I agree with what the others said. Please do try a meal replacement drink, or some chicken stock or pureed fruit in milk if you can handle it. Nutrition is important.

Keep hanging in there.

I found sports drinks made me worse. Way too much sugar. And this body does not tolerate the sugar substitutes.
When I was really unwell I lived on Boost/ Ensure and baby rice cereal, and broth. It kept me going for quite some time.

Dx with Crohn's in 1997 after 5 years of worsening symptoms.
Resection a few months after dx after 1 month on TPN and IV steroids.
Resection October 2008.
Also have severe asthma.
Fibromyalgia (allergic to Lyrica)

Tried: Pentasa, Cholestyramine, Asacol

Presently taking: now on Imuran, probiotics, calcium, B12.
For asthma I take Advair 500, singulair

After a couple of days and three times as many Powerade Zeros (32 oz), I don't have that constant dehydrated feeling. I don't seem to have a problem with the sucralose--I think it causes far less gas (if any) than sugar. Not crazy about the taste, but don't mind it. Energy levels are much better too than with the regular sugary sports drinks.

Where do you live? I live in Edmonton and all over Canada we have store's called "Booster Juice" and they are WONDERFUL when I am flaring and can only subsist on liquid I live on Booster Juice. I think in the states they have the same type of store. Not sure of the name though?
