Dave..great to hear. Very incouraging. What do you think of GAPs vs SCD?  From what I understand I hear GAPs incorporate things that actually heal your gut as well as just keeping symptoms away.

Happy Thanksgiving!

There are more who also follow the SCD diet, but most of the others I believe follow a modified SCD diet. Basically follow most of the rules, but add in a few "illegal" items.

Kinda like me, I follow a "modified" low residue diet all the time as this works well for "me". Not the healthiest, I agree, but it keeps me feeling better to follow this diet.

Gail, the theory behind the diet is that is starves out the bad flora from your gut and even a few grains of illegals can feed the bad guys for weeks. So you are either fanatically compliant on this diet or it is unlikely you will get results. Most of the folks I talk with who are doing SCD are not doing any illegals. It would be interesting to do a poll.
livingwell - I looked at both and decided on SCD. I guess the deciding factor for me was that SCD was designed initially to heal gut issues. And SCD for sure heals the guts of many, me included. GAP does discuss the importance of omega 3 and 6 being in balance and I have incorporated this into my diet. So while I am 100% SCD compliant I also take learning from other diets.

Quick question: do you need to have a yogurt maker? Because I don't have one but I'd like to make the yogurt. Or should I get one?

You can make the yogurt in your oven: http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info/knowledge_base/kb/yoghurt_scd.htm

I use the Excalibur dehydrator to make my yogurt, but it's a bit expensive.

I haven't posted in a long time due to time constraints, but I'm still going strong on SCD. Over 3 years now, and I've been in remission for about 2 years. I love this diet yeah.

Dave, I believe that Custom Probiotics Starter # 2 is not legal because it contains B.Longum which is bifidus.

You are correct # 2 is not legal. I get #1 and I get added cassie. This give me all 4 legal yogurt strains and no pills.
Also, the yogurt tastes great. In fact I am going to get a bowel right now.
BTW feel free to email me is you wish to discuss SCD further

Thank you Nanners :-)! I always mean to pop back in, but time always seems to get away from me. I adopted a 2nd bird, and she takes up A LOT of my time.

In the German forums I don't get any support for SCD whatsoever. I've never seen so many people being against something.

So yesterday my mom in law, who was supportive with this diet so far, told me I should eat normal again, because I need to gain weight. I told her in the past I ate what I wanted and how much I wanted (I was always hungry while in a flare-up) and I would still lose weight. I also told her it takes up to a year to be symptom-free. Also I said that while being in a flare, I never gain. As soon as I get healthy again, I will gain again.

How can I convince her that the diet is helping? So far I stopped my diarrhea. I'm loosing a lot of blood which I seem to compensate with all the meat I eat everyday. Had some blood work done just a few days ago and my iron + ferritin looked fine. And I still have mucus, which causes a lot of urgencies and accidents. Not sure, when this will stop.

I follow the stages of pecanbread.com now and I'm in stage 2.

Question for Spookyh.  I see you have been on the SCD for a few years , but I also see you are taking humira since 2008.  My question is,,,,how do you know that it is the scd keeping you in remission and not the humira?

I'm a newbie and trying SCD.  This is hard.  I've been gluten free for 2 years already and I can't do dairy so I was half way there.  But I'm really craving the starches.  I miss rice.  I am REALLY struggeling with the SCD but trying really hard to stay on it so I can get off the meds .  I am currently taking 2400mg of Asacol-I think that's a high dosage what do you think? Please HELP I'm getting discouraged. I'm on week 5 of SDC. HELP ME PLEASE

Have you noticed any improvement since cutting out rice? If not, you could probably safely add rice back into your diet... Pretty sure it says in the book that if you don't notice improvement within the first 30 days, the diet is not going to work for you.

RE: DFDave... the theory behind the diet states that it's to starve out bad bacterial, but all the diet really is is an anti-candida, elimination diet. Elaine even stated that the whole "fanatical adherence" crap was thrown in there because she knew it would be difficult to get back on track if one were to cheat. I'm sorry but any sugar is going to feed bacteria - whether it comes from bread/rice or bananas and grape juice. You could theoretically be on the diet forever and never really starve out the "bad bacteria" if you chose to eat only the high-sugar foods that are allowed - assuming you even had yeast issues to begin with.

LilBitE, 2400 mg of Asacol is not a high dose.

You should start your own thread, this one is pretty stale!

There's no need for the SCD to be as strict as it is. Fair enough if you're happy following the diet to the letter; I've no problems with people following the diet in that way if it suits them. But there's no point in torturing yourself. Bacteria can feed off practically anything - sugar, starch, soluble fibre, even protein if there's no sugar available. And 'good' bacteria feed off the same things as 'bad' bacteria, so the idea of selectively starving the bad guys while managing to completely ignore the good guys doesn't make much sense to me.

Whatever. At any rate, rice is one of the most easily digested foods out there and is a 'safe' food for most folks with IBD.

Edit: Yeah, this thread is a bit past its sell-by-date... >_>

Dude...take it easy. This stuff is psychological also. If you're going crazy, you're not helping yourself. Eat the darn rice. Oh and 2400mg of Asacol is nothing. Some people on this forum take like 32432543543 meds.

I agree it's easy to starve yourself on GAPS/SCD. I'm eating rice again beacause I lost too much weight being strict on GAPS.

SCD/GAPS for the first 2 months was great for me but months3-5 I went down hill and flared. So ensure you're getting enough calories one way or another. I also found eth flare the hardest one i've had to get under control - possibly becuase i had lost weight and my body was deficient of resources to deal with it.

Rapid weight loss isn't a good thing obviously so yes...eat the rice.

Hi there, I'm writing a book on IBD and I'd really love it if you if anyone with crohns or colitis would take the time to answer a few questions.

I want to find out what's working for people - i'm particularly interested in the diet and alternative therapy side. Hopefully, with enough responses they'll be some clear correlations with people achieving long term success.

You can find my questionnaire at:
surveymonkey.com/s/whatthedoctorwonttellyou

Thanks so much!
