So, I just bought Acidopholus and I am wondering how you are supposed to take it. I was told that in order for it work properly for Chrohns that we have to take it ever 4-6 hours or something and we have to take x billion organisms...there is a lot of different information out there about it...what do you guys do?

Does anyone know what the proper way to take them is? I don't want to take too much but at the same time, I want to take enough so that it can be effective if it could be.

There is a lot of information on Probiotics. But after the lesson I recieved yesterday I can tell you that just Acidopholus is not enough. There are lots of strains out there and something that has multiple strain in it is better than just a single strain.

With that being said. I think most bottles tell you to take it with food. I have found that I can take it either with or without food, you are going to have to test it and see how you feel. Also, as far as dosing, that also is personal. I have a probiotic I like that is 3 strains and shelf stable. When I know I am due for a Remicade treatment I up my dose but for right after a treatment I take one at night with the rest of my meds. If you cannot tell a difference after a week you need to adjust either the dose or the brand. Not all brands are created equally.

Best of luck.

I have seen a recommendation that the capsules be taken 20 minutes before eating (on an empty stomach). This is to let the capsule pass through the stomach as quickly as possible. If the capsule dissolves in the stomach, a lot of the probiotics are killed by stomach acid. Taking it on an empty stomach means that there is less stomach acid present and the capsule will pass quickly into the small intestine.

As for the types of probiotics to take, there is a lot of research on probiotics and bowel problems. That research has identified a couple of superior bacteria, some of which are available in stores. The research has shown that the bacteria in Culturelle, Align and VSL#3 produce measurable improvements for people with bowel problems.

I saw the GI today and asked him about probiotics, he recommended Align and said it has been tested and is proven effective in some patients. It is about $30 for a month supply and he said it would definately be worth trying, he did say that lactobaccillus showed no effectiveness for crohn's but I don't think he said anything about Acidopholus. I have been taking fish oil and it really does seem to make me feel better when I remember to take it daily.

I have just been diagnosed with UC and I have been on something called Digestive Advantage Coln Care for Crhons and Colitis.  I take this in the morning with fish oil and a multi vitamin.  I take it with or without food.
I also take something called Susstenx which is made by the same company and I take this late in the afternoon.  The only reason why I am taking the Susstenx is I bought this before I realized they have a product made especially for Coliits.  I called the their 800 line and said I can take both as long as I give it six hours before each pill.
I have to say I bought this in the middle of a flare and it has been 21 days and I feel a million times better.
Good Luck I hope you have the same results.
P.S.  I bought this product in Walgreens but soon after found it much cheaper on Amazon.

I've made my first, possibly lame, attempt at getting probiotics by buying some Multibinta multivitamins.

I have no idea what's in them really, and not sure how to find out. The chemist I went to had no idea what Crohn's was or what might be good for me. I figure they're not going to have a negative effect, and I can stop them after the 30 pills if they don't seem to have a positive effect.

Where do people buy their probiotics from? I notice a mention of Amazon, but what should I look for? I'm in the UK, so not sure we'll have the same brand names here, and they're not going to be listed by bacteria names...

I also bought some Actimel, again with the same idea - they can't be "bad" for me right? It claims "each bottle contains over 10 billion live and active probiotic bacteria".
