I'm waiting on my book to get here, I had to order it, I couldn't find it locally.  I continue to research everyday and I'm sorry I'm asking so many questions.....but here's one more.  I am still on my steroids from my recent flare.  I am tapering (too slowly). now on 20 mg am and 10 mg pm.  My question is, do I start the SCD diet now?  I mean as I add foods will my stomach still react like it would if I was
off of the steroids?  Right now I am doing low residue.
Also, I posted a question about where to get a dimmer switch....sorry I'm so needy.   I'm probably too inquisitive.  Trust me I'm not even asking half the questions on my mind right now!! yikes!
Diagnosed with CD 3 years ago.  Refused to take meds until recently started Colazal.

Dee, you can go right ahead and ask all the questions you like. And thanks for starting them in a new thread; it's much easier for people to respond to you that way.

I'm sorry I can't give you any specific advice on the SCD, but hopefully Spooky, Emom or one of the others will be along shortly to advise you.

All the best.

The steroids will be masking the problems caused by not starting the SCD plan, so it will be harder to notice the benefits, but there is no reason not to start it. The diet does not have a direct effect of your stomach/gut (except as regular food would). What it does is control the growth of bacteria that the gut immune system reacts to. Removing the source of the immune response and the ensuing inflammation is a good thing even if your pred has controlled the inflammation part. The library idea is a good one - that's what I did to get started on it.

I think spooky and I have been on vacation at the same time! I'm back for a bit, though!

Dinkydee, you're very cute! There's no such thing as being too inquisitive! Fire away with the questions!

I agree with Keeper. Why not start it now? You might want to start with the intro diet as recommended and stay there until some time after you've finished your steroids--just a thought.

Remember that setbacks can occur, so don't get discouraged. My son had issues around his third month on the diet and drank a liquid diet for about 10 days. Then back to square one with the diet. It was tough. Go slowly! (Especially go slowly with the home-made yogurt) Some people experience a die-off of bad bacteria (herxheimer reaction) early on. It can make you feel lousy but it's a good thing! Again, don't get discouraged! smilewinkgrin

Have you familiarized yourself with the SCD online sites? How about the yahoo group? They will be a great source of support and information, too! Good luck to you!

Actually, I'm going out of town next week!

I'd say it's common to start SCD with a med like prednisone. It may mask an intolerance you have to a food, but you'll still start the process of killing off the bad bacteria and adding in the good. Once you start reducing the prednisone, you may find that a food that formerly sat well with you no longer does. If that happens, just wait awhile (maybe a month or so), and try the food again.

I don't know if you saw my post to you in another thread. If not, here it is :

Good luck! I hope you find a lot of success :-)!

I did Spooky, thanks! I started the diet yesterday! I made the chicken soup and I ate ALOT of it. It was yummy. I haven't found the dry curd cottage cheese yet. I'm going back to the health food store today and I am buying the yougurt maker. I'm excited to try that. I can purchase the one recommended by all on here just a little more than ordering it online. I think it would be easier to return it if there was a problem, and I'm ready for it now......Right now my biggest "miss" is I have 1 cup of coffee every morning with splenda and half and half. I will try it with honey....but will miss the cream. I'll get used to it, 8 years ago I drank it black. And I like weak coffee. My husband thnks I'm crazy for doing this b/c he was there when I talked to my doctor about it who said diet doesn't matter, plus he knows my love of food. But I'm doing it!!! The library is closed today, but will visit it tomorrow.

Thanks everyone!!!! I've always asked alot of questions since I was a kiddo, probably drives my doc crazy! But as you all answer on here I'm taking notes, learning and making changes. So really appreciate it!
