Hi! I was just diagnosed with crohns in june of this summer '09.  I started on humira a month ago which i s working really well for me so far ( other than thoes stingy pens!)  What do you think my chances are of eventually needing surgery?  For thoes of you that have had surgery, did you have the disease for long before things went down hill?

I was doing well at avoiding surgery, until I spent 3 years off all meds and not following the diet I was doing (SCD.) Basically I ate a bunch of junk food and didn't take any medications for 3 years -- that put me on the slippery slope to surgery. With that said, everyone ends up with different results. Some people have it really bad and end up losing 4ft of small bowel at age 18. Others do well and go 50 years without meds and don't end up needing surgery until they're 70. Some people never end up needing surgery at all.

+ Recently hospitalized because of ruptured small bowel; docs got it under control but have scheduled resection surgery for January 2010.
+ Taking Cipro (1000mg / day), Flagyl (1500mg / day), and Entocort (9mg / day) until surgery
+ SCD for past 10 years
