I currently take 90+ mg of codeine everyday for diarrhea. Thing is I find my concentration is shot and I feel lazy a lot, I often wonder if this is down to the amount of codeine I take.

I use calcium for bulking too and Immodium doesn't agree with me and Questran/cholestyramine didn't work. Just wondered if anyone had any suggestions of anything else I could try for diarrhea or are there any other meds that have constipation has a side-effect that would be less dope-ifying than codeine?

I'm sorry but I feel just like you. Nothing i've tried has worked. Currently taking 8 gm of colestid daily but it doesn't work either. GI says take imodium but I hate the symtoms of it too.

Isn't lomotil also a kind of opiod? Opiods do work great with me for diarrhea but with uni and everything I'm starting to find the dopeyness a bit troublesome! And my tolerance is insanely high - during my last flare I had to get pethedine injections to control the pain as well as double-doses of tramadol and it still didn't get rid of the pain!

I believe when I was on lomotil my Dr. said it was an opiod bonded to a larger molecule so it wouldn't pass through the blood brain barrier so you got no narcotic effects.

I used 2mg of lomotil per day and it worked great. It gave me approx. 7 hours or worry-free time. Any more than that made me listless.

Ever try digestive enzymes and probiotics?

I was taking Questran and a lot of loperamides, as well as cocodomol and all the other medication and I still had/have terrible diarrhoea and my doctor has just put me on questran light instead when I told her I was still getting a lot of diarrhoea. I cant say at the moment if it is actually working as I am having a flare up atm so my movements are all over the place, and I am now back on the steroids!
If you do find something please let me know.
Good luck!

Thanks guys, I'll ask my doctor about lomotil next time I go.
The diarrhoea is due to some permanent damage somewhere in my GI tract - I'm in remission but I'll never have full bowel control on my own - the best way to describe it is that my body doesn't have a its own "off" switch, it just keeps trying to go even when theres nothing left in me so the codeines job is to stop that and hold everything still and I use calcium for bulking as theres a lot of bile in it. Its been this way for at least 6 or 7 years, I tried so many diets and I couldn't find any probiotics that my body agreed with - very stubborn system unfortunately!

Hi lilchronieUK,

I also take Questran & Lomotil. The Questran i have to take for the rest of my life as my ileocecal valve was removed when i had my resection. But i found nothing really worked for me for D until i tried Lomotil, it has been a life saver for me. It's the only thing that really slows down my intestines and gives me a rest for a long period of time. It doesn't really make me tired, a little bit groggy maybe, but i find i feel more realaxed from it as i am a big stress head most of the time. So it gets a major thumbs up from me. You should give it a try, you'll know within a few days if it's for you or not.

Best of luck,
