Hello all,

This is my first time posting, but I have been reading the posts since being diagnosed with Crohn’s in October 2009, and have been learning a lot and getting comfort from everyone.  My story is I went to the doctor in September thinking I had a bad hemorrhoid or a fissure(which I had two yrs before), but it turned out to be an abscess.  It wouldn’t go away and the surgeon who was treating me had me get a colonoscopy to make sure the infection wasn’t all up in the colon.  It apparently was just in the rectum, so I ended up having surgery at the end of October because it didn’t get any better.  When I had the follow up appointment with the GI who did the scope he told me that I had inflammation in the area where 12 years before I had to have a foot of my colon removed, on the right side, and reattached.    The GI told me that 2 years ago when I had had my last colonoscopy there was no sign of inflammation, but now there was.  At that time he put me on 2 Pentasa  4x a day, and told me to eat whatever I wanted, and come back to see him in January.  He didn’t want to give me any other pills since I had just had the surgery for the abscess. I have lost about 25 lbs. total.  My legs and feet were swollen for a while, but they have since gone down.  I still am having issues with my very tender swollen bottom.  I started getting another sore on the right side of my bottom the week of New Years, and I went to see the surgeon again, and he said that there was nothing more he could do until I see the GI.  I sit in a sitz bath, but nothing seems to help.   I have also started a food diary.  I saw my GI on January 11 and he has put me on Flagyl 500 mg 3x a day for my rectum issues.  Also, he told me to take an Imodium once a day to slow the diarrhea, which has helped a bit, a prenatal vitamin and to eat calories.  My question is will the Flagyl help my bottom and how long will it take.  It gets hard to go to work and be uncomfortable during the day.  Thanks for listening because I know it was just ramblings.

First of all, I just want to say welcome!!! I'm so glad you decided to post, and I hope you continue to do so!

I'm sorry to hear about all you've been through, and I hope you'll find the best path to recovery...My main concern is that your doctor ever told you to eat whatever you wanted. That can hurt us Crohnies so very badly!!

I actually suffered from some rather nasty hemorrhoids before Crohn's started showing up as well. I've found that the flushable preparation H wipes (or generic equivalent in my case) really help with pain in the rectum. Wiping beforehand helps mitigate the pain in BM's and using one afterward helps numb it so you're not going through the usual "ooh, ah, ouch!" when walking or sitting.

I've never been on flagyl so I can't answer anything about that, unfortunately...I do take pentasa, however, and that DOES help. It just took a few months to really show any progress. Have you taken any rounds of prednisone??
Diagnosed with Crohn's in May of 2008.
Currently taking for Crohn's: Pentasa, omeprazole, Loestrin birth control, and Align probiotics.
Also taking Amitryptaline, hydroxizine, prosed DS, and hydrocodone for Interstitial cystitis.
I do keep a blog of my experiences and mishaps with these diseases. See profile :)

I've been taking flagyl for an abscess and fistula for awhile now and it is nassssssstyyyyyyyyyyyy! It makes food taste bad and water taste like the worst possible thing to ever put in your mouth!
For my first abscess, I took cipro and flagyl and the abscess went away.
For my second abscess, I took cipro and flagyl and the abscess ruptured, causing a fistula extending superiorly to the rectum in September.
My GI is making me take flagyl again, but I don't have alot of hope for it to remove the abscess and remove the fistula.
I don't know why the flagyl worked one time, but not the next. In both cases, I was asymptomatic as far as I was concerned and both under stress. I guess my body just responded better to the flagyl the first time. It may or may not do the trick for you, but since you're getting another abscess (in a different spot?), it doesn't seem likely.
Good luck and let me know if the flagyl works for you!
Diagnosed with typical Crohn's at 16.
Got lucky with Asacol for a year, then even luckier with ten years of relative remission.
Now abscesses and fistulas are having an "atypical" Crohn's party around my junk.
My HMO refused the Remicade and now I could be going on Lialda or sulfa? blah

Find a really good ColoRectal Surgeon and get their opinion...I don't know if the first surgeon was a general surgeon or not but don't mess around...make sure anyone who does surgery on your bottom is a C/R Surgeon!

Are you running fevers?

My doc always goes with the Cipro/Flagyl mix.

Remicade is suppose to be helpful with fistulas, you might want to discuss it with your doc.

bee propolis caps 500mg one cap twice/day
omegas 369 caps one cap twice/day
probiotics 10 billion cfu once/day
vitamins C-calcium ascorbate (easy on the gut) and vitamin A each once/day
Prodiem fibre supplement one cap before bed
I've also altered my diet (no junky stuff at all, processed, fast-foods, refined sugars, ect) and exercise regularly.
I went from 30+ bloody BM's/day with lots of lower back pain to an average of 5/day no bleeding no back pain and completely formed stools, still have severe urgency issues.
~~~~~~~~My bum is broken....there's a big crack down the middle of it! LOL :)~~~~~~~~
Thanks for the thoughts.  My GI wanted to start me on the flagyl first.  I have also had some blood lab work done the other day for the doctor.  He was testing for at least 4 different things.  Not sure what they were for other than B12.  He did run thru the list of medicines that can be used so we are starting slow I guess.  I have had no fevers.  Since taking the flagyl my stomach is queasy, and the metally taste in my mouth makes it hard to eat, but the GI said if I could work through those the pill should work for me.  The surgeon told me he would do whatever the GI doc says because he can only do so much and the GI needed to do more.  It just gets frustrating dealing with all the stuff, but I try and be positive now that I am on a plan, at least for the next couple of months.  I see the GI again in mid-February so hope I can hang in there.
