Saw my GI today for the first time since my surgery and he wants to do another scope in 4-6 months. I am going on just Imuran for maintenance but he said that since my disease works quickly (as evidenced by the damage found during surgery) he wants to make sure that things are staying calm on the Imuran.

I didn't have a scope for about 3 years after first surgery, and about a year after the second (after the first I wasn't on maintenance meds either...bad dr!)

How are you feeling? I was thinking about you the other day...noticed you hadn't posted in a while. Are you standing straight now? Hope things are going well!

Becky - I am doing a heck of a lot better this week then 2 weeks ago! I returned to work for a few hours yesterday, which went well. I am tired, esp when I walk/stand much, but driving again and easing back into a normal routine. I still sleep with a pillow under my knees but the last couple of nights I've been able to lay on my side. Can stand up straight but honestly find myself crouching just a bit since it's more comfortable on my belly. My surgery was 3 weeks ago today and my GI seems to be pleased with my recovery so far.

Probably the best thing I did was have a massage yesterday! My back/neck muscles were in awful shape after surgery. I actually slept through the night last night! I highly recommend it for anyone who has surgery.

Thanks for asking!

My doctor said i would not need a scope for 3-5 years after surgery. I said no we are doing one now to see if the crohns has stayed away.
Well the doctor was happy that I pushed him cuz we found out the Crohns was back after 10 months. just imagine how much more damage would have occured if we didn't take a look.
I'd request for one after a year of surgery just to make sure.

I had 3 resections and I only got about 2 and a half years in between each. I don't remember how long I actually went between them before I had to have the scopes, but I know I didn't go more than 6 months with out symptoms. For me there was obviously some microscopic disease left behind that was working its little black magic and I'm glad I had scopes done and ended up getting it out. Since the last resection things have been much calmer, not total remission, but much closer to a normal life.

I had a scope 1 1/2 years after surgery, and that was only after I asked my GI how often I should have a scope done. He said every two years. It had been 4 years since my last scope. The scope showed ulcerations/inflammation at the anastomosis site. I upped my meds from Pentasa to Imuran.
50 y/o F. CD dx'd Aug 05. Initially on Pentasa, then Imuran 125 mg. Started Humira (very reluctantly) on 10/24/07. Ileocolectomy 4/08. Back on Pentasa as maintenance.

Wow, all the GI docs seem to do things differently, and there doesn't seem to be any standard! So glad this subject has come up, as I had a small bowel resection in 7/2009 and will ask my GI doc about it when I see him in March.
