Hi Everyone!

I am so happy to have found this wonderful place of information and hope.  I am currently flaring with a UTI and am on 20mg of Prednisone.  Can anyone tell me if they have problems with mouth sores from the Pred?  I seem to get a very sore tounge and white sore spots on my tounge when on Pred.  It goes aways after discontinuing the Pred but is there anything you can suggest I do in the meantime.  I mean I already brush and floss, use a mouth rinse (3 x) a day.

Thanks for your time! :)

My daughter gets these occasionally too, but she is on Entecort, not prednisone. These tongue sores did start this fall, around the time we put her on the Entecort tho. Wonder if it's a steroid related thing then?

I get aptheous ulcers in my mouth and throat (crohn's ulcers). I have used a stroid ointment, inhaler, laser treatment and high dose pred to get rid of them. They are painful and peel and bleed (like cancar sores but bigger). I have also had a prescription mouth wash for them. If it is thrush you will have to goto the dr for an antifungal rinse to get rid of it. Thrush is a build up of yeast in the mouth.

Sounds like thrush. There may be candida in the mouth, but it may be present in the intestines. A Complete Stool Kit will determine what is going on. And the stool kit gives you a wide range of information about other things that might be off-balance. I have been able to successfully bring the candida levels down drastically. My crohn's was limited to the terminal ileum and that may make a difference. I know the mouth sores hurt, so I wish you luck! At least if candida is the cause, it is something that can be dealt with and we crohnies need a success once in awhile.

I used to get tons of mouth sores, and the ENT told me to try dissolving a tsp of salt, and a baby aspirin in a cup of water. Stir well. Do NOT swallow, just swish in mouth,(and gargle a little if you can without swallowing, if the sores are in your throat) then spit out. I used to keep a glass of it by the sink and use several times a day. It really did help. Now that I am on Remicade, I don't get the sores anymore.

Oh sorry, I forgot, and the dentist also told me to try switching to Biotene toothpaste and mouthwash. Some ingredients in regular toothpaste and mouthwash can cause problems, too.

I’ve had horrible episodes where my mouth literally fills up with ulcers; I had 27 at one time!! The best thing I found, after trying pharmacist-recommended treatments, is half a cup of hot (as hot as you can handle it) water, with a LOT of salt (salty as you can manage) – swish it around and hold it in your mouth (it will sting) for as long as you can manage. Do this as often as possible, making sure that it isn’t doing any damage (you don’t want them to bleed but you do want them to sting) – this cleared mine up faster than anything else, if I did it regularly throughout the day.   Hope this helps

Thanks everyone for your insight and tips! I really appreciate all the feedback. It drives me NUTS dealing with all these seemingly small issues on top of all the big issues (Crohns, Diabetes, etc...) Does not seem fair. Boo Hoo on me :). I really am grateful for all the replies though. Doc is sending me for a CAT tonight at 7 because my white count is 19 and I have been battling an infection in my gut for a couple of weeks now. I know they are going to throw me in the hospital for IV antibiotics and meds. I must have about a million dollars in hospital fees. Ugh. I am being a whiny complainer when I know so many people in the world have suffered more than I have this week. Bless you all and keep healthy!

I was on LTD from work until sept when they decided that i can return to work as there is a bathroom at work so that solves my crohns disease problem.  I haven't returned cause im sick all the time and a bathroom does NOT solve all my problems.  I live in Canada our federal disability is Canada Pension Plan Disability (CPP-D).  Ufortunately i just got my letter this week that i was denied so i now have to go see a lawyer and see my options (i have been off work since sept 2007).  Did you have these problems or does the states rec crohn's as a disabiling disease??????????  Did you have to fight for benefits too?????

ya i had sores so bad down my throat the swelling was so bad i could hardly breath i was put on 100mg pred and luckily it worked cause if it didn't they were admitting me to intabate me.  Ya hurts like hell but its a good excuse to send hubby out for ice cream lol, check with your dentist if the sores are reachable (more in your mouth) they can use a laser on them and it will speed the healing up on them immensely and be careful i mine once became infected and abcessed NOT GOOD hurt like  H E double hockey sticks and omg did my face swell looked like rocky - to prevent this or if you think it is ever starting you can rinse with peroxide (dont swallow and yes tastes like crap but hey were use to all those crappy preps lol) but it helped clear it up fast the fistule and all.
