Iv had an ileostomy for 9 years but still have my rectum. over the last year or so i have begun to excrete small amounts of blood from it, at first it was only every few weeks. but now i get the feeling of needing to race to the toilet (something i havent felt for 9 years!!) about 5-10 times a day to excrete from my back passage.. its still only a small amount of blood but the frequency is worrying?
has anyone else experienced this? does it mean there is recurrant disease in my rectum now??

Hi Mazey,
I have an ileostomy due to crohns/colitis but I had my rectum and anus removed 4 months after ileostomy surgery and during the time my rectum was in place i also had a bit of discharge but didn't know it could still happen after 9 years. Has your surgeon ever mentioned taking your rectum/anus out? Perhaps you should go see your doc and see what they say, I know I also had rectal disease thats why mine had to be removed and you may have but without a consult you can't be sure so go and get yourself checked. Also there is an ostomy board you might like to post your question there as I have only had my ileostomy for a year and am still learning things and someone else there could probably offer you some more answers. Good luck and hope u get some answers soon. Take care

Hi Mazey,
I have had my ileostomy for 12 years and still have my rectum. I have always had a very small amount of discharge from time to time and a very small amout of blood every couple of weeks or so and then sometimes no blood for a couple of months. Adjusted my diet helps to keep things good. I have had a small amount of blood every week or so lately, so i went to the doctor today and have been given a referel to my original surgical doctor (as I underwent emergency surgery) and another refferel to my recovery gastroenterologist. I am due to see both of these guys on the first of June 2011. Due to your frequency, I also suggest you get yourself checked out immediately. I have not seen a specialist about my Chrohn's for 9 years, so its well overdue for me, I will be prepared with plenty of questions and interest of any new medical advancemenst that may be available. All the best

You might be bleeding from your rectum do to disease reaccurance in your rectum. Thats why I eventually had my rectal stump removed is because it was still causing me problems with the disease process. I was still getting quite a lot of rectal abcesses which I thought the illiostomy would help tremendously but it didnt until I got my stump removed. After that Ive only had 2 or 3 in about 3 years...where as the 5 years prior to that I had around 25 to 30 of them, no joke, true rectal abcesses lol.

You should be having some discharge of mucus time substance all the time which could become more over time of not using your rectum, this is sort of what helps move the feces from your rectum when you are actually using it. But if your excreting blood then it sounds to me a scope couldn't hurt to see if theres any new disease in the stump dont you think?
