I have been successfully maintained on Asacol for the past 5 years. Yes you can take the Asacol and Pred together. Whenever I have breakthru problems and have to add in Pred I never have any issues.

I take asacol and pred at the same time everyday. I don't know what you mean about having the urge to go after you take the meds. Could it be possible that just the swallowing the pills with the liquid sets off your guts? I've never had any trouble with taking asacol and pred together and I've been on both for 20 years. Asacol and pred work in totally different ways. Asacol dissolves down in the large intestine/colon so it has a local effect. Prednisone has a systemic effect (whole body). Hope that helps a bit.

I have tried Asacol 3 different times. Each time, within 20 min, I would have an URGENT need to go and have uncontrollable D for the next hour or so. It was so bad that I would have to sleep with a water proof pad on the bed in case I didn't wake up in time. In my opinion, it basically made me almost incontinent cause there was no trying to hold it back to get to the restroom. My Dr would advise me to try and stick with it, but I just couldn't deal with the side effects of it. I felt This disease is bad enough and unpredictable enough that I just finally told him that I couldn't tolerate it.
Dx'd w/ Crohn's in 1979 at age 14. Bad flare 2008 but no health insurance so I dealt with it. Colonoscopy in July 2009 caused a perforated colon, emergency bowel resection. 2 fistula's, perianal and perivaginal.
Dr. wants to try Humira...STILL waiting on that! Not sure what is taking so long...
Currently just take a probiotic, a multivitamin, calcium, magnesium, and fish oil. I also take Tramadol 50 mg and Klonopin (for anxiety) as needed.
Life may not be the party we hoped for, but while we are here we might as well dance!
