Last week I prepped for my first colonoscopy in three years. The scope I had three years ago found two rather large pre-cancerous polyps had developed in three years.
Having had several colonoscopies, I have used golightly, halflightly, Sodium phosphate [Fleet], and this time MoviPrep. Both golighly and halflighty caused my to vomit after getting only half of the required amount down. Though I didn't get all the prep in, I was properly cleaned out. The Fleet didn't cause me to vomit and worked well. The company that makes this product recalled it OTC sales of it in 2008 because of a FDA warning.
My GI assured me that the MoviPrep worked well and he had heard no complaints from his patients about it. My MoviPrep instructions were for a two stage prep - one starting at 4PM, the other at 8PM. The powders were mixed with a liter of water and I was to drink an 8 oz glass every 15 minutes. I got the first two glasses down and then felt very full and nauseous. When it came time for glass #3, I took one gulp and projectile vomited. I waited an hour and tried again to get glass #3 down. Two gulps and I vomited again. Then the prep started working.
Decided to wait another hour and try again. Take a normal size swallow of the slightly lemon dishwater tasting mixture and yes, vomited again. I then give up. The prep had things moving and I was surprised after a couple hours that things were running clear. I decide I can go in for the scope instead of canceling even though I only consumed 1/4 of the total prep!
Wake up on scope day and pass a really brown liquid. I think uh-oh, this is not good. Tell my tale of woe to my GI and he took pity on me and said he hoped he would be able to see. Afterward, he said I was very well cleaned out and the best news of all-
NO polyps were found and there was no sign of Crohn's! [He did take biopsies and I'll get those results next week.] If I have no GI problems, then my next colonoscopy will be in 5 years!
