I know this is a very old thread but I had to add something. I too have chondritis but another one relapsing polychondritis (very rare). It is another auto-immune disease that is treated with prednisone as they all are from time to time. They both cause cartilage to become inflamed. It can be very dangerous so please have it checked out. If you are experiencing that much rib cage pain you need to go to a rheumatologist. Many people who have one auto-immune disease have another. I was dismissed by my regular Dr because my RA factor (rheumatoid) was borderline. All the other ones don't register a higher RA factor.
I was misdiagnosed for years because I never had diarrhea. My diagnosis finally came 2 years ago on my second trip to the ER when I had to be admitted. DO NOT stop your meds before you find out for sure. Go to another doctor that specializes in Crohn's.
