I just bought extra virgin olive oil with canola oil.
Is canola oil healthy and tolerable for us CDers?

Anyone have any problems with canola oil?

According to James Scala ('Eating Right for the Bad Gut'), those two oils are the ONLY ones we should have.

Canola oil is considered quite helathy for a cooking oil. The Canadian Canola Oil Council (admittedly a quite biased source) claims it is the healthiest "common" cooking oil available. The only valid negative that people harp on is that a large portion of canola oil is produced from genetically modified crop. I don't have a problem with GM foods, so I use a mix of canola and olive oil in all of my cooking.

You may not have this problem in the US, seeing as you rely so much on palm oil, but I have heard that people down here (Australia) are starting to run into problems as a result of relying too much on vegetable oils... so maybe don't overdo it.

I think olive is ok; canola, less so. Still, it's said to be better for your health than animal fats.

One good thing about canola is that it has a higher smoking point, so it can be better for shallow frying etc than olive oil.
