Does anybody have any tried and tested ways to treat mouth ulcers?! I'm at the beginning of a flare, and my bowels r being a little 'naughty', but nothing bad enough that i would want to take steroids for as my crohns seems to be quite resistant to steroids and i need very high doses, which gives me bad insomnia etc
Im therefore wondering if any1 has any methods to treat/ soothe mouth ulcers. iv got alot right now, iv never had them this bad and this painful b4!! I had a cluster on the inside of one of my cheeks, and now they seemed to have formed one giant ulcer: it actually looks a bit like the images of the ulcers in our bowels, which iv never had in my mouth before! Iv also got them over the entire of my mouth- even on the fleshy bit under your tongue!
any input wud b great!
thanks! turn

I use a med called Aphthasol. It's a creme-like med that you put on the ulcer (mouth) and it forms like a bandage. Cuts the number of days that you feel the pain in half, and the sore heals more quickly too. I find most of my doctors hadn't heard of this. I learned it because my step-mom is an oral hygienist and at first I had my dentist prescribe it. Now my GI does. It's really worth it...

Once when my daughter and I got hand, foot, mouth disease and I had sores all in my mouth, I decided to call the dentist and he gave me something as well that the dr hadn't thouth of that provided the best relief. I agree with sr55 that you might want to try your dentist.

I had them for two years in relation to Crohn's. Get a prescription for triamcinolone. It's a topical steroid and it helped me.

man I've had them since 1992, reallybad, pred was the only thing, I used rinses, lydocaine, nothing worked until remicade. that has helped my mouth area, but not so much on small bowel, I've had 2 infusions so far next one is 6 weeksfrom yesterday. my gi gut totally gave up on my mouth throat issues, he seemed really concerned more in my small bowel, but he defineatly said it was cd related

thank you for all of your replies! I know that mouth ulcers are the least of alot of people's problems, and so i feel bad for complaining about them! but they do really hurt tho- so much so that it hurts to talk, and iv eaten very little today, depite actually having an appetite! im going to see my GP tomorro to try the get some tpoical steroid or something like that. My flare isnt bad enough for oral pred, so im hoping topical steroids will do the trick!
thanks again!

Try taking L-Lysine HCl supplements. It is an amino acid you are probably short on... You can buy it cheap at CVS or Walgreens. I take 1000 mg daily and have not had a sore in about 6 months now. There is also a topical mouth sore treatment made with Lysine that you can find in the oral med section, but it may be more useful for ulcers outside the mouth. I was getting tons of them, inside, but also these horrible craters on my lips that ruined my apprearance, almost back to back, until I found a post on another site about using Lysine supplementation. I'm also on Remicade, and I ahd always chalked the sores up to inflammations (like my bowels have), but while the Remi helped my bowel , it wasn't taking care of this issue at all... If you have open sores now, I would start to take 2000-3000 mg for a few days until they noticably start to heal up for you, and then continue to take 1000 mg daily. Hope it helps you - it helped me for sure.

Just got off steroids for a bad bout of with mouth sores that went all the way down my esphogus ... ask for "Magic Mouthwash" takes a while to work, but effective and inexpensive. Hang in there!  You will want to treat your Crohn's more aggressively as it will then help your mouth sores ...
45-single mom of 18, 20 & 22-year old sons, diagnosed with Crohn's in 2004 via pill camera    6MP kicked into remission (along with modified diet) so went off in 2006. Mistake.
2009/2010 ileitus and hospitalization - now on 100 mg Imuran. Currently taking 5 mg prednisone until increase in Imuran kicks in following recent dx of Crohn's in esophogus and mouth. Trying gluten free diet now.

You can also try taking folic acid (1 to 2 mg).  My rheumy suggested I increase my folic acid when i started getting an outbreak of mouth ulcers in response to methotrexate.  I've since found that it works mouth ulcers not caused by methotrexate as well.  You should be able to find it in the vitamin aisles of your local drug store, but the OTC version is sold in mcg (1000 mcg = 1 mg).
Hope you get relief soon.

thanks for all of the replies- i know can always come here for help! :)
my dr prescribed me a 5 day course of some hydrocortisone pellets that i allow to dissolve in my mouth and it acts as a topical steroid. They seem to be working a little as the pain is alot better, but the ulcers are still there too. I've only got 1 n half days of the hydrocortisone left! Im going back to see him in a few days, and he said that if the hydrocortisone hasnt cleared them, then i need some oral pred. I'm not really sure how i feel about that to be honest!

I'll definatey ask my GI about the deficiencies that people have mentioned as i always seem to get alot of mouth ulcers and so im wondering if it is due to a deficiency rather than a flare up of the crohns- at least some of the time anyway!

Thanks again!

I know I am coming into this conversation late, but my gi thought it was the least of concerns as well. So I sought the help of my dentist. He gave me a gel (Oxyfresh Dental Gel-super relief formula with Oxygene) and it is marvelous. I noticed a major difference within 24 hours. I also use a mouthrinse (Oxyfresh Mouthrinse Patented zinc with Oxygene) in combination when my mouth starts to "flare" as well. I have the bottles for both if you would like to know the ingredients to do more research as well or find cheaper alternatives. I use the rinse first and then apply the gel directly to the sores. Hope you are feeling some relief by now though.

I've had horrible, agonising periods where my mouth would be filled with 20+ ulcers, it was excrutiating, I couldn’t talk let alone eat :(

I tried Bonjella, the mouth-ulcer gel, and also this other stuff which is a numbing paint designed for mouth-ulcers. Both were effective but NOTHING worked like salt rinses did. I would make the salt solution as warm and as strong (salty) as possible, and hold it in my mouth as long as I could bear it. Sometimes it would even make the ulcers bleed, but it made them heal faster than anything else did; and provided temporary relief from the pain too. Hope this helps somewhat and they leave you alone soon!
