Took prednisone recently for 16 days for a flare... been off the steroids for a few days now and developed a low grade fever, lethargy, and a terrible sore throat and my tongue and mouth hurt and it hurts to eat and swallow.  Seen my PCP today, said that I could possibly have thrush although I don't have any white patches.  Anyone have problems with this after steroids?  He prescribed Nystantin swish and swallow, off to the pharmacy to pick it up.. hope it works!

I have cd in my throat, mouth, tongue, I'm on remicade, the first thing I noticed with the rem, was that my swallowing improved, I've been complaining since 2005 about swallowing and choking on certain foods, fast forward 2010, mu gi guy said yeas cd can be in throat etc. but he scoped me twice this year and no sign of anything in my throat, so he said maybe go to ent(ear, nose, throat) never did flare went down a bit in my throat, he asked me if I went and i said because whats he going to see when there were no visable leasions, so now 1st infusion of rem came and then I could swallow easier, so when i saw last tues. I told him what effect rem had on my throat, and that convinced him it was indeed cd in my throat etc. the rem didn't have huge impact on my small bowel, I stopped pred on my own. (hate that crap) I wanted to tell if rem was working, so without pred i could tell. of all the med's I believe for me pred was the hardest, I couldn't take that jittery, and slowing down my bowel's is the worst. for me I feel if I have stuff to get rid of, meaning bile, mucos, I need to get it out of my gut, I hope this helps, there are quite a few of us with mouth issues, someone will be along that have had thrush issues, they can help, sorry about long post, it seems I apoligize a lot for long post

Obviously I am NOT the Dr.  Be careful how much you swallow, it will give you D for sure.  My wife uses Nystatin (she has a regular need because she uses Advair and it causes thrush), and I borrow hers when I need it.  I use it strictly in the mouth, I swish and spit.  If I swallow too much I know about it.

If you do swallow the stuff, hang close to home until you see how if effects your insides.

Oh, it is supposed to taste like bananas, well..........you'll see.

It's really common, unfortunately.

My gastro doc says that women tend to get thrush on pred; men get UTIs.

Sorry you're dealing with this.

Ivy.

I took nystatin too - I found it bothered my stomach (it was extremely sensitive at the time)so they switched me to a week of fluconazole pills and it worked just as well.

Call me an old timer but I tried a wet compress made of a 2x2 gauze with a tiny bit of crushed garlic inside. Smells nasty and burns profusely if left on more than a second. However, I did this 3 days in a row, once a day. Within a week the pred thrush was gone! Amuzed the GI since she was aware garlic to have antimicrobacterial properties.
I also brush my dentures, gums and tongue every day with baking soda. Never have had problems with the thrush since. I was on 60mg daily of pred for 6 months in addition to remicade and imuran at the same time. Good Luck!
